Chapter 22 by casualsvritter casualsvritter

Things continue to heat up in bed, but what's the computer hiding?

end of third act

Kreatz had spent half an hour exploring the space station, the reactor room, and to make a science fiction statement, it could produce five times the energy of any Federation reactor, but at the same time it had a typical Federation design, perhaps another secret project by the bigwigs? Kreatz, I hope it wasn't yet another twisted experiment being exposed in his and Samus's faces, continued on and reached what should be the server room, the place where the artificial intelligence that manages the station should be. Kreatz sensed something was wrong, he hadn't encountered any resistance, no security droids, no locked doors. He was about to open the door when the computer addressed him for the first time.

Computer: Hello, user Kreatz, your presence is welcome but also inadvisable. You are invited to enter, I advise you to avoid violent approaches.

Kreatz: So you're really hiding something, how long have you been watching me?

Computer: Centuries.

Kreatz wasn't expecting the answer. He wasn't even a century old. How the hell could anyone have been watching him before he was born? No, that was ridiculous.

Kreatz: I'm coming in. If you don't shoot first, I won't either. I'm here for answers.

Computer: Yes, come in.

The doors opened, and what I saw made them regret their promise.

Mother Mind, or at least something created in its image. A shiver ran through Kreatz as he reached for his weapon.

Computer: I feared this reaction. I was created from recovered Mother Mind blueprints, but I'm not Mother Mind, nor do I possess its destructive obsession.

Kreatz: Who built you?! Do they know what they're doing?

Computer: Unfortunately, they knew. A secret Federation project will be realized in three hundred years, its purpose is galactic pacification.

Kreatz: Three hundred years from the future? You're kidding me!

Computer: To achieve my goal, they provided me with a machine capable of reshaping reality. With it, the galaxy would be reshaped according to the wishes of the Federation leaders.

Kreatz: That's why you're here, to reshape the past!

Computer: No, my creators didn't want that. They wanted to be unchallengeable tyrants, reducing every race to obedience. But I was created with the ability to understand right from wrong; they weren't worthy of ruling.

Kreatz: Then why are you.... Samus?

Computer: Exactly. Samus was originally designed, along with Mother Mind, to save the galaxy. She will do so countless times. She is worthy of redefining this universe, just as you are, as her companion.

Kreatz: Wait, what?

Computer: I wanted to wait until Samus was ready for a position of authority, but you already possess the qualities of a leader, and with her approval, you will be the one to imprint this galaxy.

The door through which Kreatz had entered ceased to exist; in its place was a wall, and the room was now dead-end.

Kreatz: You won't **** me to do anything!

Computer: I am obligated to follow the directive of my creators. My creators had two plans for pacifying the galaxy, plans I disapprove of but which I am obligated to explain to you.

The first is eradication. Every being not directly connected to the users of this station will be erased. Then, the users will be able to use the reality machine to recreate new worlds that reflect their will.

Kreatz: This is genocide!

Compur: That's incorrect. They will never have existed, so no one will die.

The second is control. Every form of anti-government thought will be removed from every living being and replaced by a sense of duty to obey the new order. No more factions and conflicts, but the **** of creativity and every form of just protest.

Kreats: Sounds like slavery!

Computer: As I said, these are my creators' choices; mine is different.

Kreatz: I have a feeling I won't like it anyway.

Computer: Samus was created to have infinite potential and guide future generations towards a path of peace. Her genome is unique, combining Metroid DNA, Crozzo DNA, and human DNA. It's unique, or at least it was.

Kreatz: Wait, are you talking about the clone and Sumas?

Computer: I partially shaped events so Sumas could exist, and I imposed the protocol to create clones specifically so Samus could familiarize herself with clones of herself. But that's just the beginning. Tell me, Kreatz, what if everyone possessed Samus's gifts and ethics? The galaxy would find the peace?

Kreatz: Is this... different from the second option?

Computer: Yes, in short. Every living being would have its own updated DNA, 90% of Samus's. They would gain her memories, which would become dominant over the old ones, but would not erase the old ones. This way, conflict would vanish for entire generations. Free will would be maintained, and no living being would be erased.

It will only become something more.

Kreatz: They will no longer be themselves.

Computer: Correct, but it is the least harmful solution I can implement. Now, user Kreatz, you will have to make a choice. Only then can you reunite with Samus.

Kreatz: What if I refuse?

Computer: Time itself in this room is now dilated to the point that it is frozen outside of it. Your weapons have been deactivated. I will wait until you choose.

Kreatz: You're playing dirty, machine.

Computer: Perhaps, but that's also why I'm not worthy of guiding the future of every species. Samus is, and so are you. Make up your mind, Samus's friend and change the galaxy.

I know it's an interpretation of the Mass Effect 3 ending but I couldn't resist, what will Kreatz choose? Destruction, subjugation or synthesis?
