Chapter 1

The divorce papers were finalized three months ago. Twenty-three years of marriage dissolved in a Nashville courtroom while your lawyer discussed asset division arrangements. Emma, twenty-one, and Tyler, nineteen, were already students at Magnolia State University when you made your decision.
Going back to school had always been a deferred dream. You'd graduates with a bachelor’s in social work when you got pregnant with Emma, married their father, and spent two decades building a life that ultimately crumbled under the weight of his infidelity with his secretary that graduated with Emma before “working” for your now ex-husband. But when Magnolia State's housing office posted an opening for a Resident Director, and with your kids already enrolled, it felt like the universe offering a second chance. The position included campus housing, tuition waiver, and a salary. More importantly: independence.
Last week, you moved into the RD apartment in Westwood Hall - a two-bedroom unit with your own entrance. Yesterday, you attended your first classes in over two decades: American Literature and Introduction to Psychology. This morning, an ivory envelope appeared under your door - an invitation from Delta Kappa Phi, your old sorority, welcoming you to reconnect as an alumna member.
Now it's Friday afternoon, and you're crossing the quad in jeans that fit better than they did at twenty-two, boots clicking on the brick walkway. Students glance your way - male and female both - with an interest that still surprises you. A maintenance worker heading toward the science building holds your gaze a moment too long. Your Literature professor had leaned close during class to compliment your analysis, his cologne sharp and expensive.
