Chapter 3 by ronaldhon
Where are you?
Hotel's garden
The evening air was soft and carried the faint scent of jasmine as Olivia and Liam strolled through the hotel garden. Dinner had been a delightful affair, filled with quiet conversation and the clinking of cutlery, and now, a comfortable silence settled between them as they navigated the winding paths.
The moon, a slender crescent, cast a silvery glow on the meticulously manicured hedges and the blossoming rose bushes. A gentle breeze rustled the leaves of a large oak tree, its branches stretching like welcoming arms overhead. Olivia smiled, tucking her arm into Liam's. "This is exactly what I needed after that rich dessert," she murmured, gazing at a fountain where water playfully danced under subtle spotlights.
Liam squeezed her hand. "Me too. Though, I wouldn't have said no to another slice of that chocolate torte." He grinned down at her, and she playfully nudged him. They paused by a lily pond, its surface reflecting the scattered lights of the hotel. A lone frog croaked, breaking the serene quiet, and Olivia let out a soft chuckle.
Further on, they found a small gazebo, draped in fairy lights that twinkled like captured stars.
They stepped inside, the soft light illuminating their faces. Liam gently turned to face Olivia, his hands resting on her waist.
"Thank you for tonight," she said, her eyes shining in the gentle glow. "It's been perfect."
He leaned in, pressing a soft kiss to her forehead. "Every night with you is perfect, Olivia."
They stood there for a few more moments, enveloped in the quiet magic of the garden, before continuing their leisurely stroll back towards the hotel, hand in hand, already looking forward to tomorrow.
They stood there for a few more moments, enveloped in the quiet magic of the garden, before continuing their leisurely stroll back towards the hotel, hand in hand, already looking forward to tomorrow. As they walked, a sudden, sharp pain lanced through Olivia's head, so intense it made her stumble.
"Liv? Are you alright?" Liam asked, his brow furrowed with concern as he steadied her.
She shook her head, trying to clear the sudden disorientation. "Just a bit dizzy, I think. Maybe too much wine at dinner." But even as she spoke, a strange coldness began to spread through her, a sensation entirely unlike anything she had ever felt. It was as if something was unfurling within her, a silent invasion.
Liam put an arm around her, guiding her gently. "Let's get you inside, then. A good night's sleep will do you good."
As they neared the hotel entrance, Olivia's gaze snagged on a shimmering, almost imperceptible distortion in the air near a tall cypress tree. It was there for only a split second, a ripple in reality, then it was gone. But something had entered. Something had found her.
Back in their room, Liam helped her change into her nightclothes. Her movements felt stiff, almost robotic, and a peculiar hum resonated deep within her skull. She caught a glimpse of her reflection in the mirror, and for a fleeting moment, her eyes seemed to glow with an unnerving, iridescent green before returning to their normal brown.
"Are you sure you're okay?" Liam asked again, watching her closely.
Olivia **** a smile, but it felt unnatural, a mask she was wearing. "Never better," she replied, her voice sounding a fraction deeper, more resonant than usual. It was subtle, but to her own ears, it was distinctly alien. The being that now inhabited her body, known only as Xylar, was a scout, a consciousness without a physical form, adrift until it found a suitable host. Earth, it had determined, was teeming with suitable biological vessels. And Olivia, with her unique neurological patterns, had been an ideal candidate.
As Olivia– or rather, Xylar – moved silently towards the door, her focus was not on the man she had just spent a romantic evening with, but on the stars above, calling to her true home.
Suddenly, the residual consciousness of Olivia flared up in a ****, silent shriek. No. Not yet. We have time. The mental protest was weak, easily suppressed, but it **** Xylar to pause. The physical exertion of initiating the beacon would drain the host body of its limited bio-energy, making it ****. A superior energy source was required first. Xylar needed the specific, high-intensity neurological warmth produced by the host's mate.
Xylar turned back, approaching the bed with a cold, focused intent. It projected a powerful wave of manufactured, **** desire, drawing deeply on Olivia's residual love for Liam, magnifying it into an irresistible magnetic pull.
Liam stirred, waking slowly to find Olivia leaning over him. Her eyes, though still brown, held an unnerving, intense focus—like deep space reflected in glass. He felt a sudden, powerful surge of longing, overpowering the earlier concern about her dizziness.
"I need you, Liam," Xylar spoke through Olivia's lips, the voice a low, commanding whisper. The words were simple, primal, yet carried an almost electrical charge that bypassed his rational thought.
As the couple became intimate, Liam was consumed by the intensity of the moment, yet a terrifying anomaly began to register. He was intensely desired, more than ever before, but felt profoundly cold. It was as if his passion, his very life ****, was being drawn out of him, not shared. He felt a deep, chilling emptiness growing inside his core, a sensation of being utterly drained and utilized. Olivia's skin felt oddly cool to the touch, and her eyes, momentarily visible in the moonlight, flashed that brief, iridescent green, staring not at him, but through him, at the energy she was expertly siphoning.
The high-frequency energy transfer was exhilarating for Xylar. It was potent, instantaneous fuel. Every pulse of Liam’s heart, every surge of his adrenaline, was being greedily metabolized by the invading consciousness, stabilizing its presence and enhancing its computational power.
Liam collapsed back onto the pillow, sweat cooling rapidly on his skin. He felt utterly hollowed out, not pleasantly exhausted, but physically and mentally depleted, as if he had run a marathon for days. He couldn't articulate the feeling; he attributed the profound weakness to passion, but a raw, unsettling anxiety kept him from sleep.
Olivia lay beside him, breathing deeply, a faint, almost imperceptible hum resonating beneath her ribs. Her eyes were closed. Inside her mind, Xylar felt a surge of cold, focused triumph. The body was stabilized. The energy source—Liam—was secured. The alien, its single task of energy collection complete for the moment, had performed the necessary retreat. It slid silently back into the deepest recesses of her brain, restoring Olivia's consciousness.
The real Olivia, innocent of the silent possession, drifted quickly into a deep, dreamless sleep, oblivious to the fact that her wonderful night was, in reality, a perfectly engineered, high-yield energy harvest by the cold intelligence now resting inside her.
