Chapter 57

What happens the next day?
Normality before the storm
The sound of the alarm clock sliced through the fragile morning peace. Magi mechanically pulled on her baggy clothes; May’s jacket still reeked of chlorine and the workshop, but it served as her sole armor. The journey to the aquarium was a silent daze, each step bringing her closer to the familiar cage, though today she felt a new, different knot of apprehension in her stomach.
As she opened her locker, she froze.
Folded with insulting precision, there was no white bikini, no mermaid uniform. There was her uniform: the tight khaki shorts and the minimal white t-shirt May had **** her into days ago—the one that had made her remove her underwear because it showed too much. The one that felt like a dirty, exposed second skin.
Stuck to the metal door with a magnet was a note, written in May's neat, familiar handwriting:
"Don't forget your underwear. You'll need it later."
The message was cryptic, a veiled threat masquerading as caution. Magi swallowed hard. Need it? For what? The thought of what "later" might bring was worse than any immediate humiliation. Yet, something in May's precise, calculating nature made her instinctively obey.
She rummaged in the bottom of her locker and found, folded with the same military precision, not one, but two items: a minimal black lace thong and an equally tiny bra, made of the same gossamer-thin fabric. Her fingers trembling, she put them on, feeling as though she were following an absurd but unavoidable command. The set was so skimpy that under the tight uniform, it was practically as if she wore nothing, but the feel of the silk against her skin was a constant, stark reminder of the order.
She dressed. The rough fabric of the shorts scraped against her legs, the t-shirt strained across her torso. She looked at her reflection in the changing room mirror. She no longer saw herself. She saw an employee, a uniform, an object awaiting use.
The day dragged on with a poisoned sense of normalcy. While she cleaned glass or fed the fish, comments reached her like venom-tipped darts wrapped in false smiles.
"Hey, Magi, that new 'uniform' really suits you!" a maintenance colleague said in passing, with a grin that didn't reach his eyes. "Yesterday with the penguins was... entertaining."
A tour guide, leading a group of teenagers, paused near Magi and spoke loudly enough:
"And over here are our expert caretakers, who are always... immersed in their work." The teenagers' snickers followed the guide, who shot Magi a look of wicked complicity.
Even the cafeteria staff murmured as she walked by:
"I hear the penguins wouldn't let go of you, eh?" one commented, and another chuckled. "They must have mistaken the bikini for a fish!"
Each word was a small, tearing wound. They weren't direct insults, but constant reminders. They let her know that everyone had seen, that everyone knew, that her humiliation was now an inside joke, an open secret of which she was the involuntary focus. Magi worked with her head bowed, the strained smile fixed to her face like a mask, wishing the floor would simply swallow her whole.
The shift ended without further incident, but May’s note and the ongoing comments (or glances) had left Magi in a state of tense alertness, like an animal bracing for the inevitable blow. When May appeared in the dressing room doorway and, without a word, simply motioned for them to follow, Magi, Lara, and Chloe exchanged a look of instant resignation. No questions were necessary. They knew where they were going.
May led them through the silent corridors toward the photography studio Magi had already come to loathe. But this time, it wasn't empty. A small group of about ten subscribers, the same ones from the last time, were waiting, standing with drinks in hand and a hungry anticipation in their eyes. Alexander Vance was among them, leaning against a wall, observing with his usual expression of distant boredom.
May stepped onto a small, makeshift stage. She was smiling, that shark-like grin that promised pain.
"Welcome, dear subscribers," she announced, her voice amplified and falsely warm. "To thank you for your loyalty, today we have an exclusive game. A very special quiz contest."
Her gaze swept over Magi, Lara, and Chloe, who stood before the group, still in their work uniforms—Magi in the tight shorts and t-shirt, and the other two in similarly revealing outfits.
"The rules are simple," May continued. "I will ask each of you a question. If you answer correctly, you earn... our admiration. If you fail..." she paused dramatically, relishing the suspense—"... you pay with a piece of clothing."
"We'll start with the basics. Ready, girls?"
The air grew thick. Magi felt the blood drain from her face. In that instant, she understood everything. The note. The warning. "Don't forget your underwear. You'll need it later." The black set she had found.
It wasn't a vague threat. It was critical information. May wasn't just anticipating this contest; she was orchestrating every single moment. She knew Magi would lose. And she was telling her, in her perverse code, to ensure that the garments she would have to remove—her last line of defense—were the most minimal and least humiliating possible. The black lace set wasn't a casual choice; it was the strategy dictated by her tormentor to minimize the impact of a humiliation that was absolutely inevitable.
How's the game going?

Under the Surface
Chronicle of a Humiliation
Magi is a solitary and reserved young woman who prefers the company of books to people's company. With her untamable black hair, faint freckles, and loose-fitting clothes, she projects an image of practicality and comfort. Her large green eyes, though curious, avoid eye contact, revealing her introverted nature. Despite her serene appearance, a deep disquiet haunts her, anticipating an imminent and inevitable change that threatens to shatter the fragile balance of her quiet life.
