Getting help from Liam
But it won't be easy
Chloe focused, gathering the dispersed energy of her spectral form, concentrating all her will on manifesting, on making contact. It felt like trying to shout underwater. She pushed harder, drawing on the raw desperation fueling her. The air in the common room seemed to shimmer slightly, growing colder. A faint whisper, like static on the edge of hearing, might have reached Liam’s ears beneath his headphones.
Liam... she projected, focusing the thought, the sound, towards him. He flinched, pausing his game, pulling one headphone cup off his ear. “Huh? Did you hear something?” he muttered to himself, glancing around the empty common room. He shrugged, put the headphone back on, and unpaused the game. Not enough. She needed more. Chloe poured more energy into it, pushing against the veil separating her ethereal state from his physical reality. The lights in the overhead fixture flickered erratically. A book tumbled inexplicably from a nearby shelf, landing with a soft thud on the carpet.
Liam jumped, yanking his headphones off completely this time, his eyes wide as he scanned the room again. “Okay, what the hell?” he breathed, slowly getting to his feet. “Is this place haunted now?”
Now or never. Chloe gathered every shred of focus, picturing herself, remembering the feeling of her own skin, her own form. She pushed that image outwards, willing herself to become visible, tangible, even for a moment. The air before Liam seemed to thicken, shimmer. A faint, silvery outline began to coalesce, resolving slowly into a translucent, flickering image of Chloe herself. She looked pale, ethereal, her form wavering like heat haze, but unmistakably her. Liam stumbled backwards, tripping over the coffee table, his face paling, eyes wide with pure terror. “Ch-Chloe?” he stammered, pointing a trembling finger. “What... what the fuck are you? A ghost?”
“Yes, Liam,” her voice echoed, faint and wispy, seeming to come from the air itself rather than the shimmering apparition. It took immense effort to make the sound audible. “It’s me. Please... don’t be afraid. I need your help.”
Liam stared, utterly speechless for a long moment, his mind clearly struggling to process the impossible sight before him. “Help? Chloe, you’re... you’re a ghost! How... what happened?”
Slowly, painstakingly, concentrating fiercely to maintain her manifestation and project her voice, Chloe explained everything. The old house, the shimmering potion, the accidental spirit separation. And then, the horror. Valerius. The ancient entity, the possession of her body, the endless violations she’d been **** to witness, trapped as an invisible spectator. She described the feeling of powerlessness, the despair, the **** hope sparked by the idea of using the potion against the entity inhabiting her flesh. Liam listened, his initial terror slowly giving way to horrified disbelief, then dawning comprehension and deep concern. He knew Chloe; he knew her mannerisms, her history. The details she provided, the raw desperation in her spectral voice, the sheer impossibility of the situation – it began to sink in, overriding his skepticism.
“So... that thing... Valerius... he’s been walking around in your body? Doing... doing all that?” Liam asked, his voice hushed with horror, running a hand through his already messy hair. “Jesus, Chloe. That’s... that’s insane. And you’ve just been... watching?”
“Powerless,” Chloe echoed, her spectral form flickering weakly with the emotional strain. “But I thought... the potion. It freed my soul. Maybe... maybe if he drinks it, while he’s in my body... maybe it will free his soul too? Eject him? Leave my body empty again?”
Liam frowned, thinking hard. “Expel the occupying consciousness... yeah, that makes a twisted kind of sense. Like an exorcism potion.” He looked at her shimmering form. “But... how do you get him to drink it? You’re like this. You can’t touch anything, right?”
“No,” Chloe confirmed, the helplessness washing over her again. “That’s why... that’s why I need you, Liam. I need someone physical. I need... a body.”
Liam’s eyes widened as he understood the implication. “Whoa, wait. You mean... possess me? Like in the movies?” He took another involuntary step back. “Chloe, I don’t know... That sounds terrifying. What would it feel like? Would I still be... me?”
“I don’t know!” Chloe admitted, frustration making her voice waiver. “I’ve never done it! But Liam, please! It might be the only way! He’ll be back soon, I know it. I can’t... I can’t keep watching him use me like this! Please, just for a little while? Long enough to get the potion, figure out how to trick him?” Her spectral form seemed to plead, shimmering with **** intensity.
Liam hesitated, clearly conflicted. He looked towards her closed bedroom door, then back at her ghostly image. He chewed his lip, thinking. Then, a different kind of calculation entered his eyes. “Okay... okay, maybe,” he said slowly. “But... look, this is huge, Chloe. Letting a ghost possess me? Freaky as hell. And I’ve got... I’ve got that brutal Thermodynamics exam tomorrow morning. Professor Davies is a nightmare. I’m totally gonna fail.” Chloe stared at his apparition, confused. Where was he going with this? Liam met her spectral gaze directly. “You’re like, scary smart at Thermo, Chloe. You aced it last year, remember? Tutored half the class.” He took a deep breath. “Okay. Here’s the deal. I’ll do it. I’ll let you borrow my body. But only... only if you promise to take that exam for me tomorrow morning. While you’re... you know. Driving.”
Chloe’s spectral jaw dropped. He wanted her to take his exam? While possessing his body? The sheer absurdity, the mundane transactional nature of the request in the face of demonic possession and spectral horror, almost made her laugh. But... it was a bargain. A way forward. And honestly? Thermo was easy compared to fighting an ancient entity for her own soul.
“Deal, Liam,” she projected firmly. “Take the exam, ace it, whatever you need. Just... help me. Please.”
