Chapter 14 by Kristobal Kristobal

Does he respond?

Yes

Chapter: Not Unsent

The phone buzzed again.

Emily froze.

She didn’t reach for it right away this time. Let it sit on the desk, as though not touching it might somehow undo what she’d sent. As if not reading it might un-send the emoji, the tease, the "Guess I should…” that had come out sounding far more like an invitation than she'd meant.

But finally, her hand moved.

The screen lit up.

Will:
I mean… I’d definitely like more.
But I’d understand if you regret sending them. I won’t bring it up again if that’s what you want.

No punctuation on the first line. Perfectly measured in the second.

Like he was trying to be careful. Not just with his words, but with her.

The kind of careful that says I want this, but I’ll pretend I don’t.

The kind of careful that says I’m listening, even if you don’t know what you’re trying to say.

Emily stared at the message, something small and hot moving under her sternum.

She hadn’t expected him to be an asshole. But she hadn’t expected… this.

That line again:

I’d understand if you regret it.

Did she?

No.

She regretted the timing. The impulse. The way the message had sounded.

But the sending?

The photos?

The feeling of being wanted, without obligation or expectation?

No. Not that.

She set the phone down.

And didn’t answer.

Not yet.

She needed to think.

But even as she turned back to her computer screen, her fingers hovering above the keyboard again, she knew something had shifted.

He hadn’t pushed.

He hadn’t begged.

And that—that—was what made her want to text him back again.

What does she say?
