A Wednesday Afternoon Disturbance

Wednesday is your lightest day. You only have one lesson all day, and that’s in the morning. Abigail told you it’s permissible to leave school grounds if you don’t have lessons, but this early in you don’t feel comfortable doing so. Instead, you spend the afternoon working on your lesson plans in your office. Now you’ve met every class, you can adjust them appropriately.

The corridor is quiet. Neither Abigail or Mrs Oversight appear to be around. You shut the door to your classroom, but you leave the door between classroom and office ajar. It’s for this reason that you hear someone enter the classroom.

You look up, expecting at any moment for someone to knock, or even open your door. Nothing happens. You’re about to shout to see who it is, when you hear someone speak.

“Are you sure there’s no-one here? Should we check the office?” You don’t recognise the voice.

“Nobody’s here. They’ve all gone home. I tell you none of the teachers hang around if they don’t have to. Only we must stay in school.”

You recognise that voice. It’s the voice of Monday’s troublemaker, Kelly Golden. What’s she up to?

“Mrs Oversight’s still around.”

“Yes, silly old bat. But she won’t hear anything in here. The acoustics in these rooms are weird. You ever noticed, you can’t hear anything going on in this room from the corridor. Only this classroom. The other classrooms aren’t like that. And I told you, that fool Mr Smith would leave it unlocked, didn’t I. We’re totally safe.”

“So, what’s this all about? You said you the perfect plan to get at Mrs Sorgood?”

Kelly chuckles. “Yes, this is a doozy. You remember how she lost it last year with Janice. No, you don’t. You were Lower Sixth then. Well trust me, you remember when Mrs Sorgood had a week off. That’s because Janice got to her. Really got to her. Shit, I think she was about to hit Janice, until Miss Wandering came in and managed to calm her down. Well, I’ve worked out what caused it. And this time there’s no Miss Wandering to calm her down. She’ll lose it, and they’ll have to sack her.”

“Sack her?”

“She was suspended last time for a week. And I heard it from a good source they were close to sacking her. She thinks she can mess with me, well she’ll find out. I always have the last laugh.”

“Mess, with you? She caught you cheating.”

“Everyone does it. She’s the one who told the exam board.”

“She could have told your father.”

“Big deal. He’d have liked it. You know he always tells me the secret of business is to find your opponents’ weak spots and exploit them. Well, I found the exam board’s weak spots, and I would have exploited them, if she hadn’t found out and told them. He’d have laughed and told the exam board not to have such obvious weaknesses next time. If it hadn’t been for her. Well, I know her weak spot.”

“What is it?”

“What is it? The fabled Mr Sorgood. That’s her kryptonite. Ever wondered about him?”

“I thought she was divorced.”

“Oh, it’s juicier than that. I’ve found all the details. A right creep. He’s in prison.”

“Really? Prison, what for?”

“Armed robbery, GBH. He was a one-man crimewave. She testified against him at the trial and according to the papers that didn’t go down well. He vowed he’d get to her. Well, I’ve found a recent photo of him, and I made a profile for him on LocalDating. Look here it is.” The girls giggle. “See I’ve connected us, and made it look like we’ve been on dates. During the lesson tomorrow I’m going to pretend to get a message, and when she confiscates my phone, I’m going to make certain she sees his profile and our history. She’ll lose it completely. She won’t be able to resist.”

The two girls burst into laughter.
