What's next?
four Sarahs
Whitney stepped forward first, her athletic frame moving with confident grace. She wore grey sweatpants and a fitted tank top that showed off her toned arms. "So you're the landlord," she said, voice low and measured, eyes assessing Tom with practiced neutrality. "Tom, right?" The way she said it carried no particular warmth, just acknowledgment—athlete to landlord, nothing more.
Bela bounced on her toes beside Whitney, dark eyes bright with unrestrained energy. "This house is perfect! And you seem cool, Tom." She wore jeans and a cropped sweater that rode up slightly as she gestured enthusiastically. "I'm so excited for college. New experiences, new people..." Her grin turned wicked. "Everything new."
Leighton hung back slightly, blonde hair falling in perfect waves over her shoulders. Her outfit screamed money—cashmere cardigan, designer jeans, delicate jewelry. She examined Tom with a calculating look. "The accommodations are adequate," she said, tone suggesting she'd seen better. "My parents vetted you thoroughly, of course."
Kimberly stepped between them, eyes sharp and focused. "I appreciate you giving us this opportunity, Mr...?" She waited for his last name, ever the polite midwestern girl, but Tom saw ambition burning behind those brown eyes. She wore a button-down shirt and slacks like she'd come from a job interview.
Tom felt Sarah's consciousness behind four pairs of eyes, her mind stretched across four bodies like fingers on a hand. Each body felt sensations separately—Whitney's muscle memory from years of training, Bela's restless energy and arousal, Leighton's habitual hauteur, Kimberly's driven focus—yet Sarah experienced them all simultaneously, effortlessly.
"Just Tom is fine," he said, studying his wife wearing four different faces. "Let me show you around."
Whitney crossed her arms. "I've got practice in an hour. Make it quick."
Bela leaned closer to Tom as they walked toward the stairs. "Do you live here alone? No wife or girlfriend?" Her question dripped with casual curiosity that wasn't casual at all.
Sarah felt the question form in Bela's mouth, felt her own curiosity about how Tom would handle this new dynamic, felt Whitney's impatience to get to the gym, felt Leighton's disdain for the "middle-class" furnishings, felt Kimberly's mental checklist of networking opportunities. Four minds, one consciousness.
Tom caught Bela's eye. "I live downstairs. You four have the upstairs bedrooms." He gestured up the staircase. "Two bathrooms up there you'll share."
"Perfect," Kimberly said, already calculating bathroom schedules.
Leighton wrinkled her nose. "Shared bathrooms. Wonderful."
Whitney headed up first, taking stairs two at a time. "Which room is mine?"
Tom watched four bodies move through his transformed house—his wife split into four young women, each carrying her full consciousness yet inhabiting completely separate lives with separate histories, friends, memories. The coin had rewritten reality so thoroughly that these four had childhoods, families, high school experiences, acceptance letters to college. They were real.
And Sarah controlled them all as easily as breathing.
Bela brushed past Tom on the stairs, her hand grazing his arm. "Thanks again for renting to freshmen. Some landlords won't."
Tom felt heat rise in his chest. Sarah knew exactly what she was doing, testing boundaries across four bodies, four personalities. Whitney's athletic confidence, Bela's sexual curiosity, Leighton's entitled attitude, Kimberly's driven ambition—all facets Sarah could embody and explore simultaneously.
"The lease starts today," Tom said, voice steady despite his racing pulse. "Rent's due on the first."
Leighton glanced back down at him. "My parents handle that. You'll have it on time."
Whitney claimed the corner room with the best light. Bela took the one next to it. Kimberly chose the quietest room for studying. Leighton got the largest.
Four separate lives. Four separate bodies. One consciousness threading through them all.
Tom's wife had become his tenants.
He wondered how long before Sarah decided to test just how far this scenario could go.
