Diego Confronts chase
Diego stood on Chase’s porch, fists balled tight. His jaw ached from clenching it the entire drive over. He’d seen enough—his mother, once proud Dr. Valeria Morales, now wore cheap maid’s uniforms, answering the phone as Valerie, her voice shy and submissive, speaking only Spanish. She spent every day here like she belonged, like this house was her world.
The door swung open, and Chase’s smooth smile was already waiting for him. “Diego,” he drawled, as if greeting an old friend. “What brings you here?”
Diego didn’t waste time with pleasantries. He shoved past into the entryway. “I know what you’ve done to her.” His voice cracked with anger. “My mother—she was a doctor, respected, brilliant. Now she thinks she’s your maid.”
Chase tilted his head, feigning confusion. “Your mother?” He gave a soft laugh, shaking his head like Diego was telling some wild joke. “No, Diego. Valerie has worked for me for years. She’s an immigrant, hardworking, humble. She cleans, she cooks, she irons. That’s who she is. Always has been.”
“That’s a lie!” Diego spat. His chest heaved, rage and desperation flooding him. “She raised me. She saved lives. She didn’t scrub floors—she taught me to dream bigger! And now you’ve reduced her to this?”
From the kitchen, they both heard her voice. Valerie humming softly in Spanish, ironing shirts with quiet concentration. The sound hit Diego like a knife—it was so casual, so content.
Chase spread his hands, almost mockingly sympathetic. “Listen to yourself. A doctor, you say? Conferences, surgeries, prestige? That sounds like a fantasy, Diego. A son who wishes his mother had been more. But the truth is right in front of you.” He gestured toward the kitchen. “Valerie. She’s always been a maid. Maybe you’ve built up some dream version of her in your head, but this… this is who she really is.”
Diego’s voice cracked as he stepped closer, trembling with fury. “You’re sick. You’ve brainwashed her, made her forget who she is. But I remember. I won’t let you erase her from me.”
Chase leaned in, lowering his voice with a sharp, cruel smile. “Erase her? Diego, you’re the one erasing her. You’re the one refusing to accept who she really is. Look at her—she’s happier now than she ever was as that overworked doctor you claim she used to be. No pressure, no struggle. Just peace. Service. Gratitude.”
Diego shook his head violently, **** on the sight of his mother’s silhouette moving in the kitchen, humming without a care.
Chase’s hand clapped his shoulder, grip firm, voice dripping with venom disguised as pity. “Face it, you're just deluding yourself. Maybe the woman you think was your mother never existed.”
