“Ninetales, use Ember!”

Blaire issues no order to Magmar. The small ball of fire hits the Gym Leader’s pokemon, but seems to have no effect whatsoever. Blaire remains stunned for a few seconds before letting out a cute giggle.

“That’s just what I’d expect from you, Emilia! Being dumb would obviously yield lackluster results when training Fire-types. Thank you for showcasing your stupidity as a trainer! I’ve enjoyed it a lot, but it’s time for experimentation! Magmar, use Fire Blast!”

Magmar pulls its head back for a few seconds before letting out a massive torrent of flames that engulfs the entire battlefield, including Ninetales.

Amidst the attack, you issue your own command. “Don’t look down on me or my Ninetales! Use Nasty Plot!”

It’s impossible to see what’s happening on the field while it’s covered in fire and smoke, but Blaire quite confidently talks as though she’s won. “I wouldn’t be surprised if Ninetales fainted from that attack alone. It may be a Fire-type, but Fire Blast is strong and the sunlight only makes it stronger. I’m sorry to have hurt your pretty Fire-type, Emilia! But maybe you should stick to simpler types, like Fighting? You seem better at battling without think-”

As the flames clear, Ninetales is visibly unharmed. In fact, the air around it is bursting with explosions even more violent than those you saw during training. Blaire’s signature smile holds steady, but she’s sweating so much you can see stains on her lab coat. “Uh, E-Emilia? Ninetales wouldn’t happen to be one of those pokemon with the Flash Fire ability, would it? I can never keep track…”

“I don’t know what that is but it sounds made up! All I know is, the more my Ninetales is exposed to heat, the stronger it becomes!”

“Yup, that’s Flash Fire. So uh… H-Hey Magmar, don’t get hit.”

An instruction like “don’t get hit” won’t mean anything if the entire battlefield is bathed in flames! “Ninetales, use Fire Blast!”

Though Magmar’s attack was impressive, Ninetales summons a towering wall of flames in a completely different league, making the entire lab glow with billowing fire. Blaire gulps as she takes out her remote and closes the sunroof, attempting to cut off the sunlight, but it’s too late. As Ninetales launches its attack at Magmar, the entire battlefield is caught in an explosion that threatens to blow you away.

You fan yourself while waiting for the field to clear up a second time so you can see the outcome of the attack. Unsurprisingly, Magmar has collapsed, and your Ninetales stands victoriously. Now’s your chance a for a cool one-liner. “And that’s why you shouldn’t make fun of stupid girls! …Err, wait! I’m not stu-”

“Wow, Emilia! That was incredible!” Despite the boiling temperature, Blaire shuffles over to you excitedly. “Other people might have tried to come up with a strategy or something clever, but you said, ‘Nope!’ and just powered through with brute ****.”

You lured her into using her strongest Fire move, and then used the weather to your advantage, and- No. It doesn’t matter. You won, and now all you have to do is collect your badge and leave. Through gritted teeth, you answer, “Maybe that’s evidence that I’m not actually dumb.”
