“As a scientist, I’m a big fan of the scientific method,” Blaire explains. “That means we have to make sure our results are reproducible, so we’ll do a 3v3 battle. If you’re a strong enough trainer to earn a badge, you should be able to beat my pokemon three times over! Sound good?”

“Sure! My pokemon will prove how strong they are as many times as you want. Just don’t forget to credit me when you publish a paper about how strong of a trainer I am.”

Blaire chuckles as she takes a remote out of her coat pocket and pushes a button, causing the floor of her huge lab to flip over and reveal a wide open field suitable for battle. At the same time, a sun roof opens up over the room.

“Ooh, pretty…” you mutter, looking at the sky and clouds overhead.

“Being airheaded is a great quality. It suits you!” Blaire remarks.

“Every time you’re rude to me will just make me gloat harder when I win!” you shout.

Blaire starts by gripping her pokeball through her sleeve and tossing it onto the field. “Rapidash, I choose you!” A majestic steed emerges onto the battlefield, its mane made of beautiful fire.

Ah… So the Gym isn’t Ground-type. Maybe a Fire-type Gym for a tropical island should’ve been obvious enough on its own… Well, even if it looks pretty strong, a Fire-type should be no problem. “Onix, go!”

Your rock snake easily towers over Rapidash, but Blaire maintains her cool and keeps a smug smile in place. “Rapidash, let’s outmaneuver it. Use Agility!”

From a pokemon as strong as Onix, all it’ll take is one good hit to finish this! “Onix, hit it with your tail!”

Onix’s tail swings across the field like a baseball player going for a home run, but Rapidash leaps over the attack with ease.

Blaire shouts, “Now’s your chance, Rapidash! Double Kick!”

Rapidash leaps towards Onix, forcefully kicking off of it like a springboard and rebounding back to the ground. Onix recoils, taking significant damage from Rapidash’s high-speed attack. Grr, if it’s such a problem for it to get up close, then you’ll just have to keep it at a distance.

“Onix, Rock Slide!”

Onix launches a flurry of rocks at Rapidash, but the flaming horse easily dodges them all with plenty of opportunity for a counterattack.

“Rapidash, Double Kick again!”

Like last time, Rapidash is able to jump across the battlefield and land on Onix with **** speed, sending Onix reeling back until it falls over. You have to return Onix to its pokeball. Shoot, this Rapidash is really strong!

Blaire smiles angelically from across the field. “I think it’s great that you remembered Rock-type is super-effective against Fire. But did you forget that attacks do zero damage when they miss?”

Grr… Whether it’s intentional or not, this girl sure knows how to be aggravating!

“Go, Dugtrio! Use Mud Bomb!”

As expected, Rapidash is able to dodge the attack, but it quickly becomes mired in the mud covering the ground.

“Hmm… Flamethrower, Rapidash!”

She adapted fast! “Dugtrio, underground!”

Dugtrio manages to dodge the attack at the last second by going underground. But, with Rapidash stuck in the mud, this is the perfect chance. “Dugtrio, Earthquake!”

The ground rumbles fiercely, bringing Rapidash down into the mud and rendering it unable to battle. Blaire returns her pokemon to its pokeball.

“A Dugtrio? It’s stronger than I expected. People use that pokemon for serious battling…?” Blaire mumbles while raising her eyebrow in skepticism. Even if she’s being rude, Blaire’s words bring a tear of happiness to your eye. Finally, someone commented on your Dugtrio without saying it looks like three penises… “I guess that’s all the more reason not to lose. Go, Flareon!” Ah, Flareon! It’s so cute!

“Flareon, use Lava Plume!” Less cute! Less cute!

Cracks begin to form in the ground around Dugtrio. Before it can burrow out of the way, lava blasts out of the ground, completely consuming Dugtrio. By the time the lava subsides, Dugtrio has fainted. That Flareon took Dugtrio out in just one hit… You’re down to your last pokemon, but that just means it’s time to bring out the best matchup you’ve got!

“Golduck, go!”

Blaire’s at a type disadvantage, but she seems positively thrilled. She jumps up and down, clapping her sleeved hands together like this is great news. “Yay! This confirms it! You’re definitely stupid, Emilia! You made exactly the mistake I was expecting you to make. Flareon, use Sunny Day!”

An intense sunlight begins beating down on the field, making you sweat. It’s a good thing you’re wearing something so breezy… Even so, you can’t let this blazing weather, or Blaire’s stray insults, get the better of you. “Golduck, use Water Pulse!”

Golduck fires rings of water at her opponent, but they can’t maintain their shape, and they fall harmlessly to the ground a second later. “Huh?”

Blaire looks at you with genuine concern. “Oh no, don’t tell me you never learned about weather effects. This is starting to feel like bullying… I’d better end this quickly.”

“Weather effects? That sounds made up. Show her, Golduck! Use Water Gun!”

“Flareon, counterattack with Flamethrower!”

Golduck’s Water attack faintly makes it across the battlefield, only to instantly evaporate when coming into contact with Flareon’s concentrated stream of fire. The billowing flames are one of the most destructive move you’ve ever seen, and Golduck falls over after taking a direct hit.

“That was… a flamethrower?” you wonder in disbelief. “Even my Water-type fainted in a single hit…”

Blaire strikes the same one-legged pose she did earlier, relishing her victory. Damn it… She looks so cute… “Thanks for showing me the limits of your battling skills, Emilia. What a great outcome! And now I have empirical evidence of how stupid you are!” she remarks. “Next we can get to the fun part: the experiment! …Or at least, that’s what I would like to say, but I’m still putting the final touches on my latest invention. Maybe you can come back and test it for me later? But for now, we’ll do something equally as fun: a quiz show!”
