Chapter 29 by Cross C Cross C

What happens next?

He encounters a flaw in his normality.

The horrendous shriek of the train's brakes assaulted my ears and I went flying backwards, the heavy weight of my shield ensuring I hit the floor particularly hard. Bruised and my head stinging, I pushed it half off of me and saw Natsu kneeling on the floor next to me, none the worse apparently for having taken the brunt of this asshole's magic. My eyes moved to the pineapple headed bastard on all fours nearby for only an instant before my attention was violently arrested by the most bizarre thing I had ever seen. It lay on the floor between us, apparently having fallen out of this guy's coat during the emergency stop. Staring at it, literally seemed to make my brain hurt.

It was... It was- a carved wooden stick of about forearm length but that description did not do it's utterly astounding and abnormal appearance justice. It was topped with a very creepy three eyed skull but honestly, that didn't account for the completely unsettling and vaguely frightening feelings it instilled in me. I mean- Lulu's shop had had a half a dozen freaky items that had legitimately made my blood run cold- but this... it just did not belong in this world. It. Was. Not. Normal.

Beside me Natsu was talking, noticing what I had as well, “Huh. What's that?”

Yea. What was that thing?! I got to my feet and tried not to make it look like I was huddling behind my shield.

His voice slightly pained, the enemy mage said, “You saw it.” I peeked out over the top of my shield. The guy was staring right at Natsu and I suddenly got the feeling he was ignoring me or- or my power was working on him now for some reason.

A burst of heat and flame from right next to me abruptly ended that line of thought. My sense of self preservation had me jumping into the seats nearby and putting my shield up as a barrier behind me. Natsu was growling, “That's enough out of you! It's payback time!” Then the whole car seemed to be on fire and I did my best to huddle into a tiny ball against the wall and underneath my shield as it did its best to absorb all of the energy coming my way.

I heard Natsu's roar through the inferno and the other mage call out, “Guard Shadow!”

Then the entire car was rocked, a tremendous crash battering my ears as my shield felt like it had been hit by a cannonball.

A moment later and the fire was gone. Trembling slightly, I got to my feet. The train car was utterly wrecked and filled with smoke, the seats were various piles of shattered wood and burnt upholstery, a giant gaping hole open to sky in the roof. The enemy mage was collapsed on the ground, glaring at Natsu behind a sleeve wiping blood off his mouth. “Damn you.” he cursed.

Natsu was posing like some sort of bad ass in the middle of this ruin. He said something cocky but I didn't catch it over the PA system still working incredibly, “Attention all passengers. Our emergency stop was an accident. We will depart again shortly.”

Crap! Natsu was thinking the same thing as I was and before I knew it, he'd grabbed his bags and made for a window.
Asshole mage was saying, “I'm not letting you get away that easily! You're messin with Eisenwald now!”

Natsu stopped long enough to huff, “So you're with Eisenwald, huh? I'll show you what happens to people who mock Fairy Tail! How about we take this outside!”

I was already outside, having taken Natsu's idea to heart and climbed through one of the blown out windows, my shield shrunken back down. I wasn't interested in being anywhere near another one of their fights. The train lurched and started to move and I dropped off and stumbled quickly away from the tracks. Within moments, the train was rushing on and leaving me behind. I kept waiting for Natsu to 'take it outside' but then I remembered his motion sickness. Oh. Great. Now I was the one leaving people behind and I had no excuse like the others.

I heard a peculiar sound and picked myself up off of the dirt road that ran beside the tracks. My eyes widened and my stomach jumped up into my throat as I saw the green car hurdling towards me at a life-flashing-before-your-very-eyes speed. I caught a flash of Erza sitting atop of it driving before she suddenly veered around me at the last minute. I was gasping for breath at the terror still gripping me, the last minute reprieve doing little to calm me down. I also had the distinct impression that the only reason she hadn't run me over was because my mangled body caught in the wheels might have slowed her down.

I turned and watched Natsu dive through a window of the swiftly receding train in the distance and someone on top of the car catch him. The car swerved to a stop, kicking up a tremendous cloud of dust.

I sighed and starting trudging the roughly half mile distance to catch up.

Sometimes being normal sucked.
