The Speech
Good evening everyone — students, families, faculty, and honored guests.
It's hard to believe this chapter is ending. For years, high school was our whole world: the hallways we walked, the people we saw every day, the moments that felt like everything — until they weren’t. We’ve grown in ways we couldn’t have imagined. And not just because of textbooks or tests. We've learned from each other.
_That's the real secret no one tells you: sometimes the most important lessons come from outside the classroom. Sometimes, you’re lucky enough to meet someone who changes how you see everything — even yourself. And if you're really lucky… you recognize it before it’s too late._I used to think I was so smart. I thought I had it all figured out — college applications, future plans, even who I was and what I believed. But then I met someone who challenged all of that. Someone who helped me realize how wrong I was about so many things. He didn’t do it to tear me down — he did it because he saw something in me that I hadn’t yet seen in myself. And because of him, I see more clearly now. I understand things I never could’ve figured out on my own. Without him, honestly, I would’ve stayed pretty lost.
_He's my boyfriend, but he's so much more than that. He's a compass. A mirror. A wake-up call. I'm lucky — truly lucky — to have him in my life. More lucky than I probably deserve. And I can't wait to spend the rest of my life showing him how appreciative I am of him._We all need people like that. The ones who cut through the noise, who tell us the truth when we're too stubborn or too blind to see it. The ones who guide us toward the best version of ourselves. And when we find them, we owe them more than thanks. We owe them our trust, our honesty, our support. We need to honor them, not just in words, but in how we live our lives moving forward.
But we don't grow alone. That's another thing I've learned. Real strength isn't about proving you're better than the people around you. I'm looking at you, ladies. It's about learning to support each other — especially the people who challenge you to be more than you thought you could be. We've wasted too much time competing when we should've been on the same side. So if there's one thing I hope we all take with us, it's this: look for the people who make you better. The ones who hold up a mirror and ask you to see more than you did before. And when you find someone like that — someone who makes you question everything, and somehow makes it all make sense — don't fight it. In fact, do the opposite. Do everything in your power to keep them in your life. No sacrifice is too great. Trust me: you'd be lucky to have them in your life.
_To the class of 2025 — thank you for everything. Thank you for choosing me as your valedictorian. I'm proud to stand here with you. Let's go out there and become the people we were always meant to be.- - - - - -

Madison stared at the screen in front of her. She'd rewritten her speech five times that evening. The old speech had seemed so empty. Which, to Madison, made sense. She'd written it before Joey came into her life. Before she really started to understand who she was.
Satisfied, she hit save, then attached it in an email to the Vice Principal. He was in charge of proofing what she was going to say, a final check to make sure nobody got up on the stage and started quoting Nicki Minaj lyrics. Madison hoped she gave Joey enough credit in it. She knew that he could be shy sometimes, so she'd left his name out, but she wanted the world to know what kind of man he was.
It would have to do. The final draft was due on Monday. She hit send, hoping that Joey would like it.

Mansplain
...um, actually...
The day after Joey's eighteenth birthday he discovers that something has changed. He'd been accused of mansplaining before, but now when he does it, women begin to think that he's right! Where did this power come from, and where will it take him? Let's find out! Note: all characters are over eighteen.
