Chapter 21

Elena Gilbert

We had been in Mystic Falls for just under a week now, and in that time, I had achieved a fair bit. I had settled into the town quite nicely and gone to the local library in search of all records that may shed light on the tomb of vampires located nearby. I knew, of course, that they were sealed in by a Bennett witch over a century ago to protect both them and the townsfolk. I also knew that all of them were presumed dead by the townsfolk back then, as they had been locked in a church that was burnt to the ground. Fortunately for the vampires, they managed to escape with the aid of an unknown member of one of the founding families.

From what I could tell, the events that transpired in the show also happened here, leading to the creation of an organisation in town to hunt vampires. This, of course, included all the founding families. From what I could tell, their members were Sheriff Forbes and her ex-husband, the Lockwood family, the last surviving Salvatore, and most surprisingly, the parents of Elena Gilbert. I had also found out that they met once a month to talk about anything strange that occurred. Not that any of the living members had even seen a vampire, but they still kept a vigilant watch over the town and with a large supply of vervain locked away they were definitely prepared for the worst case scenario.

I had been purposefully keeping my head down to avoid any chance of them discovering what I truly was, even going out of my way to avoid them. Although that was not entirely successful, as I had run into Zack Salvatore on one of my late-night walks through town. It turns out this town must be very boring when vampires are not tearing people apart, as myself, Rose and Alexandria had become the talk of the small town. I suppose it was only natural, really, the town was small and very close-knit, so a new family moving in, especially to such an old and expensive house, would begin rumours. Although I would have still preferred to remain as unknown as possible I could not do much to change that.

I was currently on one of said walks, strolling through the sleeping town several kilometres away in the woods, and I could hear the obvious sounds of a party. But I doubted any non-vampire would be able to, apart from that the entire town was quiet, which I was thankful for as it meant I would probably not run into anyone. I continued outwards towards the edge of town, unconsciously heading towards the party I could hear. After another five minutes of walking, I saw the unmissable light of a car's headlights in the distance heading over the small wooden bridge into town. I watched for a minute, until suddenly it veered off crashing through the side of the bridge and into the icy water below.

I was across the road in a split second, looking down into the fast-flowing river. The car had almost sunk to the bottom, and without a second thought, I dived in. Freezing was the first thought I had as I broke the surface; my entire body felt like it would turn to ice at any moment. Luckily, even though I felt the cold, it would have no ill effects on my vampiric physiology, so I just pushed myself deeper into the icy depths. I was quite lucky, I did not need to breathe as the car had already sunk deep into the river, forcing me to spend more time than I would have liked swimming down to it. As I reached the car, I thought about what I would do. I knew that I could just drag the entire vehicle out with ease, even though it was quite large and with the weight of the water, I should have no issue. But if the car found itself out of the water, it would raise too many questions, so instead I swam around to its door.

Looking inside, I could see a man and a woman sitting in the front, both ****, though as my eyes turned towards the rear of the car, I saw the familiar face of a doppelganger. Elena Gilbert lay just as **** as her parents across the back seat, looking almost peaceful. Acting quickly my hands reached the door, locked, shit thats was annoying, so I grabbed the sides sinking my fingers deep into the metal before pulling hard. It tore like paper in my hands, allowing me to dive into the car and grab the young doppelganger. Slashing the annoyance that was the seat belt I dragged her out before cannoning myself out of the water.

I shot out of the river, the **** doppelganger draped across my shoulder, and with one last push, we both landed onto the riverbank. I listened for a second, quickly realising that her heart was not beating. Without wasting more time I started trying to resuscitate the doppelganger, while quietly thanking my previous life's decision to go into the medical field. It took me close to a minute before a spluttering cough kicked water from her lungs, and a faint but steady heartbeat started. I looked back at the water, realising that two more needed to be saved, and with a kick off the ground I shot back into the water.

I had both of the Gilbert parents on shore with me, trying to resuscitate them to little success. I had called an ambulance, knowing that even if all three seemed fine, they would need it. It arrived in a hail of blue lights, tailed by a sheriff's car. Continuing chest compressions on the two until paramedics arrived next to me and got me to step back. Looking down, I could already tell that the two parents were a lost cause, they had been under water too long, their hearts inactive for over five minutes, there was no chance they would recover. But Elena was alive and hopefully she would make a full recovery.

I was brought out of my thoughts by a soft voice, "Can you tell me what happened, Mr" Looking around, I saw the face of Liz Forbes, the sheriff of the town. As I looked at him, my enhanced vision picked up something strange at the edge of the woods, a figure who, if I was not mistaken, seemed to be Stefan Salvatore. "Mr, can you tell me your name"? She asked with a sad smile on her face. "Ye,s of course, Asmund, Asmund Mikaelson". I answered as I looked over her shoulder to see that the man I though to be Stefan had vanished. "And can you tell me what happened?" Liz continued while jotting down my words. "Yes, I was out for my nightly walk. I had been going for a while when I saw headlights and all of a sudden, they veered off the road. I ran as quickly as I could to the edge of the bridge before diving into the river after it. It was then that I pulled the first passenger out before starting to try and resuscitate her as I noticed her heart had stopped. After her heart started, I dived back in, managing to pull both of the other occupants of the car out and doing the same. As I finished my statement, Liz thanked me and asked me to stay for a minute as I might still be needed, before heading off towards the ambulances.

When Liz Forbes returned, I was told she was going to the hospital and asked to come with her to be checked out. Even after assuring her I was fine, she insisted, seeing I had **** in the matter I followed her to the car, before stepping inside. "So Mr Mikaelson, you're new in town, right?" she asked, "Yes, we just moved last week"? I answered her. "And you're going to be teaching at the high school, right"? She continued, nodding I let her continue. "My daughter, Caroline, goes there, so does the young woman you saved tonight, Elena. What is it you are teaching"? She asked truthfully, I expected an interrogation from the women, but this seemed far more friendly than I expected. "History, I am taking over from someone called Mr Tanner" I answer. "Yes, Tanner, I am sure all your students will be glad to be rid of him", she said with a slight laugh.

The rest of the drive was filled with gentle conversation, Liz Forbes was obliviously trying to get as much information as she could about he newest resident of the town, but I did not mind, I was, after all, too careful to reveal anything of much worth. I followed her into the hospital, the all too familiar hum of the old school lights filling my ears, as the smell of bleach assaulted my nose. It was quite nice to be back in a hospital after so many centuries, it felt weirdly like home. I followed Liz for about a minute before we reached a small room tucked at the end of a hallway. "Can you give me a minute?" nodding at her question, I walked over to the coffee machine on the far side of the hall. She was gone for a minute before leaving the room, walking over to her, I offered one of the coffees to her, which she gladly accepted. "I did not know how you drank it, so I just went for back goel, that's alright", I said quietly. "Yes, it is, thanks. Listen, I have got to wait for Elena's aunt to come here, she is staying in town, so it should not be too long. I would like you to stay, she should know who saved her niece. Nodding at her words I agreed before sitting down into one of the chairs littering the hall.

True to sheriff Forbes words it was not long before, the face of the familiar Jenna cam edahsing through the hall, hair a mess and eyes red from crying. She greeted Liz before they both went in to see Elena.

I sat waiting in the hall for about twenty minutes before the door swung open again and the familiar redhead crashed into me. "Thank you, thank you for saving her life" she managed to get out between the tears streaming down her face. I wrapped my hands around her shoulder while trying to comfort her, not with much success, she had just lost two relatives after all. When she stopped crying and let me go, I was told that Elena had woken up and was relatively unharmed, well, minus the couple of broken ribs and the cuts littering her body. It was then that I was all but dragged in by Jenna to meet the doppelganger, my eyes met with the familiar face of the young woman, a small smile on her face. "Thank you, Mr Mikaelson, I am Elena". I smiled already knowing this, fully aware of the doppelganger and the trouble that would be coming her way and as such mine.
