Rebecca's Inventory: Switchblade, Large Specimen Jar(Filled)
You got what you came here for, and neither of you want to talk about what you had to do to get it.
Thank goodness, because you have ran out of time. You can barely see anything in the cabin now, and falling down a hole would suck. "Come on, Rebecca."
"Right. Bye, Joshua." She whispered. You both head back to the trap door, and you hand the flashlight to Rebecca right before you usher her down. You barely miss stepping on her as you step onto the ladder, grabbing the door and carefully lower it back into place, sealing this end. Hopefully, there isn't an Infected out there smart enough to figure out how to get down here.
When your feet touch ground, you turn and hurry to catch up to Rebecca, who is very eager to get back to the lab. So much so that she has already taken off. Her brisk pace and the twists and turns of the tunnel causes you to slam more than once into a wall, but you do catch up to her. The rest of the trip is quiet, until the flashlight begins to die. "Fuck."
You agree and start to remove the pack on your back, but Rebecca just speeds up. It isn't fast enough and the flashlight dies, leaving you both in darkness. Wait, no it doesn't. You can just barely make out a glow coming ahead of you. You advance forward, and are pleased to discover that to the right is illuminated from the lights of the shelter you are returning to. "You didn't shut the way back, huh?"
Rebecca has followed you and looks a bit sheepish. "Sorry." "No problem. It worked out."
You both step back into the shelter, and Rebecca heads straight for the lab. Leaving you to slide the
covered objects back into place, which was easier than Rebecca made it look earlier. You shake your head, Rebecca has been fairly safe for a while and you have been dodging Infected the entire time. That toughens you, you guess. "Hey, I'm gonna need you for a bit."
You comply, and balk at what awaits you in the lab. "Just need some of your blood for testing. That's all." You shudder, but sit down anyway. Fuck, you hate needles. Just..not something you enjoy. Your mother had to go to the hospital a lot for some sort of disease she got from her mother, and you got poked and prodded and stuck twice a year to test for whatever it was. The doctors last time had said that you had came out clean, and that it didn't look like it would ever show. It didn't help that much, since you had watched your mother's last moments when you were 15. The agony she had to be exp-"All done."
Wait, what? "I took all I'm gonna need." You, you, you just inner-monologued that entire blood-drawing experience? Damn, wish you had known to do that back when you were 4. "Anyway, this might take a while, so you're free to do whatever you want till then."
You step out of the room, having grabbed the flashlight Rebecca left sitting on a counter, and try to
occupy yourself. You replace the battery in the flashlight, check your clock and lantern, replace the
batteries in the clock and being thankful for it being a fancy survivalist clock, clean up the
bedroom Rebecca has been using, and drag upstairs the dead Infected. It also gives you plenty of time to think.
You've changed. Whether from the **** or the cure, you have noticed that you are thinking differently. You seem quicker to anger, and quicker to forgive as well. Maybe you've become a little stronger as well, now that you think about it. Dragging those covered objects wasn't too bad, and dragging the dead body up to the second floor and dumping it in the men's restroom there was more bulky than heavy. Plus, you have been observing Rebecca more than strictly necessary. This worries you, so you head back to the lab to hopefully find some answers.
You step back inside, and notice an immediate change. Rebecca had been looking hopeful when you left, now she's frowning. She has a eyedropper in her hand and an eye to a microscope. Slowly she drops little amounts of semen onto a blood sample. Each drop seems to make the frown worsen, before she empties the contents of the eyedropper all at once. She must already know you are here, because she speaks without looking away from the microscope. "Want the good news, the bad news, or the worse news?"
Which do you want first?
