Chapter 24 by Knobgoblin Knobgoblin

Interrupted

Morgan, still leaning on Theo's shoulder and draped in his coat suddenly shot up as a figure burst onto the path, breaking branches announcing its imminent arrival caused her and her companion to stop. Theo took a defensive stance as the person stumbled about, his arms waving this way and that to brush off the leaves and twigs he had been collecting on his person as he traversed the woods.

"Fucking, ugh!" He cursed as he frantically rubbed his hair before he noticed the pair on the path. "Theo?" His head turned to Morgan. "Honey?"

"Nelson?!" Morgan exclaimed.

"Want me to kick his ass?" Theo whispered with a chuckle. Morgan shook her head and giggled, before offering his hip a check with her fist.

"Shush." Morgan whispered. "What are you doing in the woods?"

"Um, I was out there in those fucking trees looking for you!" Nelson swore as he stepped closer. "What the fuck is going on with you tonight?"

"Excuse me? No. You can stop that shit right now." Morgan planted her feet, then placed her hands on her hips.

"Alright, I'm going to leave you two with... ...each other..." Theo nodded and winked back at Morgan as he stepped past Nelson.

"Well when the hell would you like us to deal with this then, Morgan? Huh? Because this seems like something we should be able to resolve but then you fucking took off, naked, into the night! Why?!" Nelson shouted.

"No." Morgan laughed and shook her head, disappointed with her husband yet again. "I'm going home. You enjoy the rest of your company retreat. Do not follow me or attempt to speak to me until this dumb fucking conference is over. Once you get home we will speak."

"Morgan, you've got to be fucking kidding." Nelson spit as he watched her walk around him. "Morgan! Do not fucking walk away from me!" He shouted after her but remained cemented to the ground. "Morgan! Come back here!" He still only half turned, his back still mostly to her.

Nelson's insisting pleas became more angry and almost frothy but still quieter. For several moments she worried he might come after her, but his voice continued growing distant. Morgan quickened her pace and returned to the cabin in a short run and slightly panting. Theo had been sitting outside with his girlfriend and for a second time tonight she was grateful for his presence.

"Hey guys!" Morgan tried to sound pleasant, but there was clear distress in her voice.

"Everything okay?" Lucy asked. "You look upset." Theo leaned forward and shook his head at Lucy, but she shrugged it off and got up to slip an arm around Morgan's waist. "What's going on? You and Nelson get into it?"

"You could say that." Morgan laughed as her eyes began to well with tears. "I'm heading home tonight so it'll just be you three for the rest of the week." She continued.

"What? Oh no. I can't have that. You can't leave me here with those two." Lucy insisted with a smile. "I can help you pack if you'd like." She offered warmly.

"Okay, thank you." Morgan smiled and leaned against Lucy.

The two ladies went inside where Morgan shared what she could with Lucy, leaving her trysts with Theo out of the equation, as they packed up her things. Lucy offered her unconditional support, sharing some stories of her own. With Lucy and Theo's help Morgan was able to get herself and her luggage into a ride-sharing service without once seeing Nelson.

"Make sure he doesn't hurt himself." Lucy suggested as Theo grumpily went off to find him.

"I cannot thank you enough, Lucy. You and Theo." She smiled and laughed.

"It's nothing. Just get home and of course message us to let us know you're safe." Lucy stated motherly.

"Okay mom." Morgan mocked, and laughed when Lucy poked her in the side.

"You're a pain aren't you?" Lucy laughed. "I hope I'll get to see more of you back home."

"Absolutely!" Morgan threw her arms around Lucy and embraced her tightly. "I've got your number and you'll be hearing from me as soon as I..."

"Get to the airport, take off, land, and of course when you get home." Lucy interrupted.

"Each of those?" Morgan laughed as she pulled away from the hug.

"Yes! Each of them!" Lucy waggled her finger at Morgan, as her phone dinged with a text.

"He's fine. Pissed, but fine." Theo texted and Lucy read it aloud.

"Good. I was a little concerned." Morgan added solemnly.

"It's okay, we'll look after him and I'm sure you'll figure it out. Whatever it is." Lucy tried to assure her as a car pulled up to the park's entrance. "I think this might be your ride."

The two watched as the vehicle pulled forward slowly and came to a stop a few feet away. Unsure and unwilling to approach, it wasn't until the driver rolled down the passenger-side window and announced his intentions.

"Um, hey I'm from Pick-a-Trip and I'm looking for a Lucy?" The handsome driver announced.

"That's me!" Lucy said unnecessarily excited. "Oh! Here." She helped Morgan pack her things into the back of the car. "Remember, call or text." Lucy gave Morgan another tight, warm embrace.

"Okay. Thank you. I'm taking you both out for dinner when you get back." Morgan promised.

"Oh-stop." Lucy admonished her before shutting the door.

"I will!" Morgan shout as she rolled down the window, the car driving away.
