Chapter 20: Sandy-Brown-Hair-With-Glasses
The twentysomethingâs key missed the lock on the first two attempts. With his hand shaking, he glanced over his shoulder again at the police scattered around the motelâs parking lot and walkways. That heâd been stopped before entering the motel had nearly caused him to freak out. However, heâd been granted permission to head toward his room after explaining that heâd been gone all day and was located on the ground floor, away from the crime scene. Only Deke Deasonâs nod to the police, stating he was a paying guest, got him through. The young man thanked whatever god for the lucky break, as Mrs. Deason had spotted him talking to Oswald Cozart on several occasions. Finally, he managed to control his hand enough to slide the key into its proper slot.
Dashing inside the room, the young man didnât even turn on the light before rushing over to peer out the window from behind the curtain. Scanning the parking lot near the entrance, he thought he spotted one of the people whoâd tailed him back to the motel. Running his hand through his sandy-brown hair, he muttered a panicked curse while wondering what to do aloud.
âHello, Carter.â
âAhh!â Carter squealed, jumping into the air.
Frightened, his hand slammed through the curtain to hit the window. The move stopped him from falling to the floor, leading him to spin around in a desperate attempt to reach the door again. However, the closet door facing him suddenly burst open, revealing a hulking figure in the lightly shadowed room. The dark mass showed surprisingly swiftness as it blocked his exit.
âNo, no, please donât kill me!â
The light switch flicking on momentarily blinded Carter before the blurry brute responded in a shocked voice.
âWhoa! Dude, we arenât going to kill you.â
âNo, but you wonât be going anywhere anytime soon,â a second voice declared, causing Carter to turn toward it as his vision cleared.
Sitting on a chair against the far wall with a folder in his hand was a familiar-looking scrawny teen with eyeglasses. With recognition, the sandy-brown-haired man risked a glance back at the brute and saw the other teen whoâd complicated their plans greatly of late.
âYou two!â
âYou see, Jake. We have been noticed,â the bespectacled teen announced with a smartass grin. âSo tell me, Carter Hawley, is the scam over with Oswald Cozartâs death?â
âYou killed him?â
âDonât be stupid,â Phineas Farris snapped impatiently. âFrankly, we seemed to have just missed the murder. I take it that theââ
âMurder?!â Hawley gasped.
âYes, clearly you saw them wheel Cozart out of Room 217 in the body bag. Or did you presume that Cozart killed someone else?â Phinn inquired.
âNo, no, no, I knew he was deadâŚbut murdered?â
âWell, Iâm not CSI, but I think getting roughed up before a bullet creates a hole in your chest is more likely a murder than an accidental shooting,â the smart-alec teen responded, causing his partner to shake his head. âOh, yes, Iâm sorry for your loss. Now, I take it that The Factfinders found you at Tarr Manor?â
âY-Youâre working together?â
âThatâs the second moronic assumption. Letâs avoid a third, shall we?â
âI have to get out of here!â Hawley announced, rushing over to his dresser and yanking out clothes.
âNah, youâre not leaving until we get some answers,â Jacob Magnum stated. He moved to gently stop the packing while he directed Hawley to sit on the bedâs edge.
âNot to mention that police might be interested in why a guest wants to leave right this minute. Sure, I bet a few guests are creeped out and would like to check out. However, a few simple questions directed toward the owners might reveal that you registered on the same day as their new corpse. And knowing Anita Deason, Iâm confident sheâs observed the two of you chatting,â Phinn guessed correctly.
With defeat setting in, Hawleyâs shoulders sagged, making it appear like his whole body did on the bed. Staring at the carpeted floor for fifteen long seconds, he finally asked what they wanted to know.
âWeâve pieced together most of the con or scam, but Iâd like to hear a proper explanation,â Phinn prodded.
Sighing, Hawley looked up to face Phineas.
âItâs not a scam or conânot in the usual sense. Oswald craves fame and fortune. Hey, donât give me that look. Those are his exact words. He told me that within five minutes of our first meeting.â
âWhoâs he ripping off? The city, the Tarrs?â Jake questioned, causing Phinn to motion for him to be quiet.
âNo, thatâs not what he planned,â Hawley replied, briefly turning to the stocky detective. âEverything is a guerrilla-style reality show.â
âDamn it,â Phinn mumbled, learning his least favorite theory to be true.
âNo, itâs true,â Hawley insisted, misunderstanding the curse. âOswald could never get permission to show a true treasure hunt of this magnitude or pay enough actors. So, he figured heâd get the permissions afterward.â
âTh-Thatâs crazy,â Jake commented.
âItâs not entirely far-fetched,â Phinn admitted.
âYeah, a lot of reality shows are made on spec. Oswald hoped to either sell this show once it was finished or use the footage to land a production deal for a new show,â Hawley revealed.
âThis is way too elaborate for a chance at a TV show,â Jake argued.
âWhich is what he wanted. He had a deal last year for an online-based show in Eastern Europe before it was shut down due to several contestants getting severely injured,â Hawley recounted. âThe injuries didnât seem to bother Oz, only drove him to make another attempt.â
âHow did they get hurt?â Jake asked.
âI donât know. I only met him after he returned to Jersey. Iâm a graduate student in history. Cozart learned about me somehow. It turned out that we shared a mutual interest in old pirate legends. He offered me a chance to make some money and have fun.â
âAnd you took him up on the offer,â Phinn stated.
âHey, school is fucking expensive, kid. I needed a job anyway while I finish my dissertation,â Hawley argued.
âYou created Thornbeard?â Phinn inquired.
âYou know heâs fake? Damn, you guys are good. No, Oswald created him. He concocted the whole big picture. I just filled in the blanks and did most of the grunt work,â Hawley admitted.
âHow come he chose Edgewater?â Jake queried.
âI guess it fit most of his criteria. Oz had a whole list of needs or wants. Mid or southern coastline, local legends, media availability, police and government reputation, you name it,â Hawley rattled off with a shrug. âBasically, he wanted a big enough city to attract attention and spread out the hunt, but he also wanted a smaller location so the competition could play out under the radar. Thatâs why he picked a town that didnât have its own TV stations. I donât know the final reason why he chose your town, but he decided it was perfect and sent me down about a month later.â
âSo you planted the shipâs manifest at that time in the library?â Phinn suggested.
âNo, not then. I did research a few months ago, but only planted it last week,â Hawley admitted. âWe couldnât take the risk that any of the fake documents or maps might be found before we started the game.â
âWhen did you plant the map? It wasnât in the historical society the night before,â Phinn stated.
âHow would you knowâOh! Wow, I didnât think you kids had it in you. No, Oz heard that the director often organized his files. Rather than take the risk, we brought it with the same morning as its discovery,â Hawley divulged.
âYes, I suspected that Mindy Moon brought and found it,â Phinn stated, pleased his guess had been confirmed.
âYou know about Mirela, too?â
âWhoâs Mirela?â Jake challenged.
âThe woman we know as Mindy Moon,â Phinn supplied for Hawley. âWhatâs her full name?â
âI donât know. I swear! Iâm not bullshitting,â Carter insisted, panicking after catching Phinn make an innocent gesture toward Jake. âI never even met her until the night before we placed the skeleton on the beach. I mean, I knew she or somebody like her existed, but she never appeared until we needed a lookout.â
âHow had you known that Mindy or Mirela existed?â Phinn questioned, seeking clarification.
âCozart talked about his partner a few times. Supposedly, they met when he filmed his show in Eastern Europe. Sheâs Bulgarian or Romanian and started as his local contact/fixer before ending up with a significant role behind the scenes.â
âWait, did you mean partner as in business partner, or are they together together?â Jake queried.
Phinn rolled his eyes at his best friendâs concerns.
âMaybe, but I donât think so. Mirela seems more about the money than the fame,â Hawley noted.
âDid you or Cozart jump Phinn at Bentworth?â Jake challenged, shifting to a different topic.
âNeither of us did! We were too busy setting up the next stages while Oz talked to the media to drive over there. We initially had plans to leave a breadcrumb in the college archive, but dismissed the idea. They didnât have anything that worked for the plan, and their archivist hovered too much to take the risk,â the assistant explained. âOswald said that Mirela found a better solution for that piece of the puzzle.â
âBy bringing in the Tarrs, right?â Phinn speculated.
âHow didââ Jake began to ask before realizing his questions should be directed at the other guy for now.
âItâs the only answer. Bentworthâs archives would be best used to plant evidence relating to the Blakely or Mormont families. The other two were unnecessary once the Tarrs became available,â Phinn explained.
âDamn, Oz was right to be concerned about you two,â Hawley said, whistling. âMirela is excellent at working people. I picked that up after only knowing her for a few days. Oswald called it her most vital skill.â
âWho fell for the reality show idea more: Jace or Regina?â Phinn asked.
Carter Hawley explained that Mirela first made contact with Jace Tarr several months ago. He couldnât say for sure if the petite partner sweet-talked or seduced Jace. He imagined she was good at both. However, Jaceâs initial interest died out, and he refused to carry on with the plan out of concerns about tarnishing his family name.
âAh, so Mindy turned her attention to Regina,â Phinn stated.
âYeah, thatâs the first time I heard more about Ozâs partner. He mentioned she ran into Regina while on her campus. Obviously, Mirela created the run-in,â Hawley said needlessly. âWhile the brother resisted dragging his family name into the show, the sister jumped at the chance to make her own name. Not only did she want a percentage, but Regina also wanted a starring role.â
Phinn held his palm out as if saying to Jake, âThere you have it.â
"The biggest issue with Regina is that she kept demanding a bigger role and going off script," Hawley continued.
âYes, the two of us and Jakeâs friend all saw through her acting from the start,â Phinn disclosed.
âImagine having to watch her constantly,â the sand-brown-haired young man replied with a shudder. âDonât get me wrong. Watching her definitely had some perks. Sheâs the textbook definition of an exhibitionist.â
'Or attention whore."
"Phinn!" Jake admonished before gulping as Hawley's comments sank in. "Wait, so you watched me last night?"
âI wasnât watching you. I was far more interested in watching her in action,â Hawley replied. âHer tits can be mesmerizing.â
âThey can,â Jake nodded wholeheartedly.
âBut her increasingly skimpy outfits and flashing people became a problem. Oswald wanted sexy, not nudity. Instead of listening, Regina suggested selling the show to a streaming service rather than an over-the-air network. Mirelaâs supposed to meet her with an order to knock it off,â Hawley revealed.
âWhat precisely did the Tarrs bring to the table?â the bespectacled sleuth asked, ignoring his partner. âBesides sex appeal.â
âPermissions. First, to use their ancestorâs name. Oswald conjured up most of the treasure huntâs details. However, he wanted something or someone to ground the legend in local reality. Hmm, maybe that was the final point that led him to choose Edgewater after Mirela brought in the Tarrs,â Hawley mused.
âAnother permission was using their mansion?â Phinn checked.
âYeah. Finding Clara Livingstonâs diary is supposed to be the final big clue. Actually, sheâs not real. That was something Jace Tarr insisted on. I donât know why,â Hawley revealed. âThe idea of the competition was that viewers would see the race heat up as each treasure hunter reached the Tarr Manor stage. Itâs kinda like the start of the level before you reach the Final Boss.â
âFinal Boss?!â Jake exclaimed before holding other further questions after Phinn raised a finger.
âWere those the only permissions the Tarrs granted?â
âShit, no wonder you screwed things up. No, there was one final thing. But I donât know what it is. I swear! Itâs tied into the big treasure reveal,â Hawley hinted at.
âSo, there is real treasure?â Jake questioned.
âThere are real items to be found; I wouldnât call them treasure.â
âForgeries?â Phinn checked.
âNo. Letâs call them real pieces that just arenât valuable like Oswald's book claims,â Hawley said before attempting to clarify. âApparently, the idea for this pirate hunt started when Cozart came across several items at an estate sale while filming his last reality show. He liked their look and shipped them back home. Once he got thick with Mirela, he mentioned using them for his next project. She liked the idea, so he picked up a few more items in local shops and markets. When the injuries occurred, they fled back to the States, and he settled on using them.â
âBut theyâre intended to be found at the end of the hunt,â Phinn said.
âYes. Basically, my main job at the start was to create the fake histories for each item,â Hawley divulged.
âWhat? Adelina isnât real? No!â Jake bellowed.
âExcuse you?â the startled assistant responded.
âHeâs referring to the Robles Ruby and the Spanish governorâs wife. Jake found her drawing to be enticing,â Phinn explained.
âOhâŚNo, sheâs real,â Hawley revealed, causing both teens to perk up. âThe thing is that I sort of fibbed a bit to Oswald. I guess it doesnât matter anymore. I had my own schoolwork to do while creating the fake treasure profiles. To save time, I grabbed a bunch of books about jewels and other old valuables. Since I had pictures of the items Oz wanted to use, I matched them with similar items to create the histories. Some are based on real items, while others took on similar legends. The Robles Ruby and its owners existed before it vanished. The Turma Music Box isnât real, but copied from the myth of another cursed music box that looked about the same.â
Jake placed his hand over his heart in relief. Phinn frowned, already dreading Jakeâs future request to find the real Robles Ruby. He knew it would eventually come.
âVery well,â Phinn said, satisfied with the explanation about the items. Seeking to distract Jake from the long-dead beauty, he moved on. âYou mentioned that we concerned Cozart. How so?â
"The two of you drove him nuts," Hawley revealed. "I, um, placed a few of those spy cameras at the library and historical society. Oswald was stunned to see how fast you two moved. He had a well-thought-out timeline for each stage of the hunt. At first, he enjoyed seeing one of the guys who discovered the skeleton take on the mystery. Jake and that Zay girl seemed like potential characters for the show to follow. Finding interesting people to fill slots in the show's cast appealed greatly to Oz. He thought he had found his jock and influencer when Jake appeared at the morgue, and both showed up the next day at the historical society. Then Jake also appeared with you at the library when I had time to view the footage. "
âYou were watching us all this time?â Jake asked, looking stunned.
âNo,â Hawley replied. âWe watched everyone to see who might last. Most people do a little digging and give up. So, we tried to keep an eye out for repeaters, as Oz called them,â the reality show assistant explained. âSo we noticed you two at the historical society and the directorâs reaction. By the time we saw the library footage, youâd been attacked at the college, and the media had reports about your history. Cozart started to grow concerned at the speed at which you two moved.â
âSo thatâs why he dispatched Mindy to bump into Jake at Smashburgers?â Phinn queried.
âNo, that was all Mirelaâs idea. She only told him after she ran into you,â Hawley relayed. âOz wasnât happy until she told him what she overheard. That you planned to visit the Tarrs in the next days disturbed him. The Tarrs werenât supposed to be on anyoneâs radar that early, nor was anyone expected to visit their mansion until the middle of the week. That you guys were going there only three days after the skeleton appeared freaked him out. I know Oz and Mirela fought about altering the plan.â
âSo, the doubloon drop happened early?â
âFuck, man!â Hawley responded to Phinnâs guess by throwing up his hands. âYeah, it did. Even then, Magnum and his buddy were on the scene. We couldnât catch a break.â
âSorry to ruin your plans,â Phinn responded, smirking.
âOh, but we adjusted. When that other group of teen detectives appeared, Oz started to envision a new show. He thought pitting the two groups against each other might be entertaining, even if he still hoped a regular person would step up and break out as the showâs star,â Hawley recounted before frowning. âNot that it matters any longer.â
âWhy would someone kill Cozart? I imagine itâs possible the murderer was after the pirate treasure, but that seems extreme. Did he owe anyone money? Have another partner or ex-partner from a past con?â Phinn rattled off.
âI donât know! He never seemed worried about money. Not that he threw it around, but we always seemed okay as long as we didnât get crazy. As for another partner? Not on this project. Mirela was the only one,â Hawley insisted. âMaybe those two guys who broke into Tarr Manor the other night attacked him tonight.â
âNo, we know them. Theyâre locals who have been following us all day,â Jake said.
âSeriously?â Hawley immediately glanced at the front window.
âThey scrammed when the police roared in here,â Phinn relayed. âCan you think of any other people you met through Cozart?â
âNot really. A few people came and went, but nobody seemed violent. ButâŚâ Hawley hesitated before continuing. âOswald said someone was following him. I thought he was just getting paranoid after the treasure hunt started. Heâd had people accosting him for information since the first news interview.â
âWhen did he first mention this?â the brainy detective asked.
âSaturâNo, he mentioned it Sunday morning. He thought somebody had followed him after meeting with a local newspaper reporter on Saturday evening. Why?â Hawley questioned.
âNothing,â Phinn responded, hiding his interest. âHow does the treasure hunt end?â
âI canât say for sure. The diaryâs clue is supposed to point to the next step before the treasureâs location. Only Oz and Mirela know where it is,â Hawley admitted, sounding annoyed that he didnât know.
âYou have to know,â Jake challenged.
âI donât!â Hawley insisted. âAll I know is that Oz said itâs a location where we canât place cameras until the last moment. Iâd learn when the first hunters were close.â
âIndoors, outdoors?â Phinn questioned.
âOh, itâs supposed to be outdoors,â Hawley replied, realizing he did know one detail.
Silence filled the room momentarily while Phinn mulled over what theyâd learned. Catching Carter repeatedly glance at the window, Jake walked over to peer past the curtain. Seeing his chance, Hawley started to slide off the bed slowly.
âDonât think about it,â Phinn warned, causing Jake to move back in front of the door.
âCâmon! Arenât we done yet? I have to get out of here,â Hawley nearly begged.
âWhere is Mindy staying?â
âI donât know.â
âI think you have an idea,â Phinn insisted. âI know sheâs not staying here. Out by the highway, north side, south side, or downtown. I think you at least suspect an area.â
âFine. Somewhere downtown or near the oceanfront,â Hawley said. âI canât tell you exactly, but it has to be down there. Usually, when we meet, itâs in that area.â
âGood. Now, where is the treasure buried? I assumed you and Cozart buried it,â Phinn repeated from earlier, hoping to trip up the assistant.
âI told you that I donât know!â
âSurely, itâs buried. There are two shovels in Cozartâs trunk along with a pair of muddy shoes in his closet,â Phinn laid out the evidence.
âI donât know anythingâŚWait, youâre right! There was a pair of shovels in his trunk,â Hawley realized. âI saw them the day we dropped the doubloons at the marina.â
âSo you didnât help bury them?â Jake challenged.
âNo! Maybe Mirela helped,â Hawley offered.
âThat small of a woman?â Jake scoffed.
âDonât underestimate her. Sheâs tough as nails,â Hawley warned.
âDo you think she murdered Cozart?â Phinn rattled off his question, giving the assistant barely any time to think.
âProbably not,â Hawley replied, shrugging. âI mean, there is something mysterious about her, but whatâs the motive?â
âFight over money. Loverâs quarrel. Show ownership. Upset over the show unraveling,â Phinn listed.
âIâŚHonestly, I donât know,â Hawley admitted, his shoulders slumping again.
Sensing theyâd gotten everything possible out of the assistant in this manner, Phinn stood up. With a nod at his partner, he gestured toward the door before motioning at the window theyâd entered through. Catching his drift, Jake confirmed the sequence.
âVery well. Weâre finished,â Phinn announced, walking toward Jake. âBest of luck in getting out of town.â
âWait!â Hawley yelled. âY-You canât just walk out there. What if the policeâŚor the killer sees you? They might come over here!â
âOh! I can see how thatâs a problem for you,â Phinn acknowledged. âBut itâs not for us. Letâs goâ
âNo! Please, canât youâŚgo out the window or something?â
âWhatâs in it for us? How about letting me see your phone?â Phinn suggested.
âMy phone?â
âYes, sign in,â Phinn instructed. Surprisingly, Hawley complied immediately, causing the teen to mentally wince for not attempting earlier.
While he quickly skimmed messages, calls, and search history, Phinn inquired over the manner in which Cozart kept his records.
âSure. He had some folders besides his laptop. Why?â
âThe killer took most of his papers, the laptop, and his phone,â Phinn revealed, forwarding several messages to Jakeâs phone.
Feeling the buzz, Jake glanced down and rolled his eyes. Of course, his partner had sent the stuff to Jakeâs phone instead of his own. Talk about paranoid and antisocial.
âOkay, letâs go,â the bespectacled teen announced, tossing Hawleyâs phone at him.
Using the chair heâd placed under the window earlier, Phinn crawled out of the high window first. Jake followed with a warning to Hawley about checking out right away. He correctly presumed that action would trigger police suspicions.
âWhat now?â the stocky detective asked as they walked down the alley.
âText Johanna the new information about Mindyâs possible whereabouts,â Phinn instructed. âHowever, warn her not to post that information, as Mindy might be monitoring her social media accounts. Sheâs to use the new detail to narrow down what her followers send her.â
âWeâre not calling her Mirela?â Jake questioned, not bothering to argue about contacting the wannabe influencer again.
âI prefer Mindy. Besides, we donât know if Mirela is her real name either,â Phinn said, glancing up and down the alley. âYou know, Cody is a shitty team leader.â
âHuh?â
âThe Factfinders tailed Hawley all the way here. The logical next step would be to place Radley in the alley to keep an eye on his room. I know thatâs what Iâd have you do,â Phinn pointed out.
âMaybe I should join them,â Jake mumbled, wishing theyâd add another person to handle that grunt work.
âWhat was that?â
âNothing. Whatâs our next move?â
âYouâll need to break up with your new girlfriend,â Phinn teased.
âNo!â
Jake blocked the heavy front door from closing. Using his strength, the linebacker/tight end slowly inched it open as he overpowered Jace. With enough room, Phinn popped his head through.
âHi-de-ho!â Phinn greeted, overly friendly. âWe only stopped by briefly to make a few points.â
âFine. Let them in,â Regina directed her brother. âIâm done talking to you about the treasure hunt.â
âWhy, look at the coincidence, Jake!â Phinn exclaimed, gesturing to his old friend. âWeâre also done with the treasure hunt.â
âYou are?â Jace questioned with a suspicious expression.
âIndeed, we are. Jakeâs grown bored and prefers if we investigate the reports of people filming porn off the coast on yachts. It does sound more fascinating. Donât you agree, Regina?â Phinn inquired.
âWhat the hell are you talking about?â the busty brunette nearly shouted.
âWell, pornâs a possible career path for you since the treasure hunt is finished. Oops, you didnât know that yet, right? They donât know, Jake,â Phinn said, turning to let his best friend take over.
âYep, the treasure hunt is finished. Not that anyone found the fake jewels. But you knew they were fake, right? No, your reality show career is finished before it started. Kinda hard for it to keep going when the showâs producer is dead,â Jake stated.
âWhat?â the Tarr siblings sounded simultaneously.
âOh, right. We should probably give a status report. Oswald Cozart is on the way to the morgue with a bullet hole in his chest. Somewhat fitting since he shot the diver in almost the precise spot. Carter Hawley is panicking and ready to get the hell out of Dodge, which brings us to you two. While The Great Summer Treasure Hunt! may have been canceled, it could morph into a version of Clue. Would you like to guess who two of the suspects might be?â
âWe didnât kill anyone!â Regina screeched.
âDammit, you just had to go along with these people,â Jace complained, shaking his head.
âUh-oh. It looks like trouble in this household. Iâm sure itâll grow once your parents, grandfather, and other relatives hear about how you used the family name to make a few bucks and flash your tits for viewers,â Phinn speculated.
âWhat does that mean?â Jace questioned about the last part while turning to look at his sister.
âForgive our intrusion. Itâs best if we get moving. However, if Miss Scarlet and Colonel Mustard wish to be cleared, then Jake had better receive info about a way to find Mirela, aka Mindy Moon, by morning. You know his number,â Phinn warned, turning to descend the porch stairs.
âUh, talk to you later, Regina!â Jake called back with a wave.
