Chapter 15 by Daddy_vampy Daddy_vampy

What's next?

Druid whisperer

With my Charm active I stepped a little closer, let my voice dip just enough, and let the spell bleed through.

"Let her go. Show them you're not the villain they think you are."

Kagha hesitated. Her jaw tightened. But then her eyes softened slightly.

"Very well," she said after a beat. "This time only."

Shadowheart’s eyes flicked to me, then back to Kagha. She didn’t say a word, but I felt the suspicion.

Arabella ran. Fast.

I turned back to Kagha. and nodded toward the statue outside, keeping my tone light. "That idol out there—Silvanus’s centerpiece. It’s more than just symbolic, isn’t it?"

Kagha tilted her head, intrigued. "You truly wish to know our ways?"

"Curiosity," I said with a shrug and a disarming smile. "And a respect for the sacred"

She studied me a moment, then spoke. "Silvanus is the Oak Father, guardian of the untamed wilds and silent groves. He embodies the endless cycle—birth, growth, ****, decay, and rebirth. To walk his path is to embrace the impermanence of all things, to nurture as much as you allow to wither. That’s the truth of the world, and he is its keeper."

She took a deep breath, continuing. "That is more than carved wood or stone. It's a living conduit—an anchor. When the grove thrives, it glows warm. When it falters, the light dims. Druidic power doesn’t come from control—it comes from alignment. We don’t wield it. We harmonize with it. And through it, we hear Silvanus’s will."

"So it responds? Like it’s aware?"

Kagha nodded, her tone shifting into something like pride. "It is attuned to the balance. Everything that lives—plant, beast, blood—it all echoes through the idol. When something threatens that balance, even the subtlest tremor, the idol feels it. And so do we."

"And lately," I ventured, "with the tieflings, the threat of goblins... you must be feeling that shift."

Kagha frowned, but didn’t disagree.

"It wouldn't take much..," Kagha mused, her voice low, almost thoughtful. "Even small actions, placed carefully, could tip the balance—just a shift. A necessary one. If the grove is to survive, it must adapt. As must those who protect it." She said, more to herself than to me.

I nodded, thoughtfully. "Well something like that would never happen"

She leaned back slightly, almost smiling now. "Naturally," she chuckled, as if the very idea were both unthinkable and faintly amusing.

Kagha had been unexpectedly engaged in the conversation, her voice enthusiastic, almost eager. I could see it in her eyes—that flicker of understanding, the recognition of something kindred. We were both people who dealt in schemes, who knew the power of timing and influence. She didn’t press. But she'd said more than enough. I shared a moment with someone I would normally consider a monster.

As the girls and I stepped back into the light of the grove, I caught Lae'zel's expression. She hadn't said a word during the entire exchange, but her stare was sharp. Not angry. Just... watching.

"You enjoy speaking with schemers," she finally said, her tone flat.

"I enjoy useful conversations," I replied.

She didn't respond right away, but her gaze flicked toward Kagha’s sanctum behind us.

"She is not unlike you," she muttered. "Too many words. Plans in her eyes"

There was no bite in her voice—just thoughtfulness. A rare thing from Lae'zel.

"Is that a compliment?"

She didn’t answer. But she didn’t look away, either.

Shadowheart’s frown deepened.

"That was a lot of detail for someone who nearly executed a child five minutes earlier."

"Maybe she just enjoyed the conversation," I said.

We walked past the idol on our way out of the circle. I glanced at it, the soft glow still steady, still Natural. Could something like that even be corrupted? I guess I had a hotline to the only one who would know.

My very dear Patron.

Graz'zt.
