A Tangle Unraveled

This was bad. This was bad.

This was very very bad.

In the grand cosmology of the omnicosmos there were beings of power like Vaelith, beings of creation and imagination like Elorae. Then there was Kavlok. If the Regulators had an office building Kavlok would be in what a human mind could imagine as an accounting department. Sitting in a cubicle. In a basement.

Or maybe a sub-basement.

The human mind would gape in awe if it could see what Kavlok saw as he stared into the endless incomprehensible building blocks of reality. To any of the other beings that inhabited the space between spaces, and kept order in the multitude of universes it would have been more like some dweeb looking at a string of code on a very outdated computer terminal.

Kavlok was one of the countless beings entrusted with quality control. He was responsible for a small section of a small part of a single town on a planet in a single universe. The chances of something like this happening were so small they were statistically impossible. And yet there was an... infraction. It was hardly noticeable. At the moment it was merely a few strands of fate tangled up. That was rare, but not unheard of. Lives diverging from their proper timelines happened occasionally. Humans used their free-will. From time to time.

This though was different.

This was knot, and at its center was a human named Joey Granger. A human who was wrapping the threads of lives around him, not like a normal human, but like one of them. He had power.

Worst of all though was the fact that it had Elorae's finger prints all over it.

Kavlok sighed. Or did whatever a being like him did that was equivalent.

There was no way a transcendent entity like Elorae would even know he existed. But he had always loved her work. He had always loved her. Her free spirit, and love of life. Her creativity.

Now though, on purpose or by accident, she had imbued a human with a sliver of power, and things were getting off the rails. If he noticed, then others might start to take note as well. If Elorae were caught...

Kavlok had to help her.

The problem was that this human had more power than Kavlok. Technically the mortal outranked him.

There was no way to undo the changes the human had made to his world. The amount of changes Kavlok would have to make to that reality to fix all the changes that human had made, would be monumental. No way to erase the infraction without every Regulator knowing about it. Then Elorae would be in real trouble.

If he did nothing though...

Okay so he couldn't fully untangle this knot, but maybe he didn't have to. Not all at once. Maybe he could make a few small changes. If the threads of reality were tangled he could loosen them. Slowly. One at a time.

With renewed resolve Kavlok pulled up the information.

Joey Granger. That was the culprit.

If Granger was the problem, then that's where he would start. He might not be able to touch the boy, but his family?

Those threads were some of the worst affected. Donna and Hank's threads should have stabilized at this point in their lives, that was what the Regulators had decreed, but now they were veering into wild new directions. A father driven into the arms of another, and a mother driven into the arms of her own...

But what if Joey weren't Donna's son?

He did some more digging, until he found Nick. Nick Fowler. Joey's best friend. A friend who had tragically lost his parents.

This could work!

Hank was already interested in another woman, Kavlok could see! Their threads were already careening towards one another. What if they were married? What if they had always been married? Sarah was a few years younger than Hank. Too young to be Juniper's mom, but Joey's? That could work.

It would have to work.

Reality skipped a beat, but none of the humans seemed to notice as their memories changed to fit Kavlok's **** attempt to buy Elorae just a little more time.
