Byleth was tempted to join them, but he was morbidly curious as to what was happening in the dining hall.
Peaking his head in, he saw that it was mostly deserted, though a few brave members of staff were hovering around the kitchen. "Ah, hello Professor Byleth" And Dimitri was sitting at a table, eating alone. Not even Dedue or Seteth were around to be seen.
"Hello Dimitri." Byleth greeted him, still feeling apprehensive about eating here. "Are you eating alone?"
"Yes. It seems most people around here don't seem to appreciate young Flayn's cooking." He shrugged before taking a bite. "I actually enjoy it. It may not be the most advanced cuisine, but I feel like most people are over-reacting." He nods. "Besides, she hasn't seemed to have as much practice as the others. I'm sure she'll be able to improve with time."
Byleth nodded, wondering if he should try and set an example and try some food as well...
"So you came to join us?" Leonie asked, making sure that there was a spot open for fishing next to her.
"Yeah..." Byleth nodded, head lowered. He had tried a small piece of what Dimitri was having... and immediately regretted. It seemed to be a mix of almost random ingredients that were overcooked and seasoned far too much, like she'd thrown half the kitchen into it. He was able to hold it down, but he could see why Shez had thrown up. Hopefully, DImitri of the Iron Stomach would be able to help her improve. And Sothis might one day stop laughing at him.
"Oh! I got a bite!" Leonie looked excited as she used several good pulls to land a decent sized fish. Byleth nodded in satisfaction, before focusing on Leonie to see what she was interested in. She was hoping for lessons in the spear and strength, and seemed to be a sub for someone she trusted or admired. He opened up a talk about Jeralt, and Leonie was suddenly enraptured as they talked, while a few students listened in - Hubert paying close attention. "AH!" The Golden Deer suddenly was suddenly startled as a fish bit her hook, but it got away that time, leading her to sigh.
"Oh! Professor!" Dorothea - one of the few not fishing, called his attention back as a bite took hold of his rod. After a few pulls, he managed to grab a fish as big as his arm! "Way to go professor!" Leonie cheered as several others congratulated him.
After a few more fish were caught, Byleth decided to take the opportunity to teach the assembled students how to prepare a fish and a cook fire, those assembled managing to do pretty well. All in all, a pretty good lunch was had after some time, before they all headed to their next classes. He had definitely felt like he'd bonded a bit with Leonie, and it was time to show his students the stables...
