Chapter 22

What's next?
A pleasant experience for Jill.
Jill climbed into Bill's backseat. A woman she'd seen at the library before (Amanda? Andrea?) was sitting shotgun with a pleasant smile. Dimly, Jill realized that she shouldn't walk away from work in the middle of her shift, but she couldn't bring herself to care. She stared beatifically at Bill, who glanced at her then at his other passenger.
"Looks like you've got a fan," the other woman said with a chuckle. Is that what Jill was? A fan? She nodded emphatically, hoping that would please Bill.
"She just followed me," he said. His voice made Jill's heart melt and she sighed as a tear rolled down her cheek. "Everyone was staring at me in there. Is this how people are gonna treat me from now on?"
Amber laughed again. "Don't worry, it'll fade. People will always like you, but probably not this much." She gestured to Jill, who was still making doe eyes at Bill.
"Ok, but how much is this? She just kind of stared at me and followed me out here." Jill once again heard them discussing her as if she wasn't there, but she didn't care. As long as she was in the presence of Bill, nothing could harm her. He turned to ask her a question.
"Uh, Jill? How are you feeling right now?"
God, the seeing those magnificent eyes trained on her nearly made Jill pass out. "Wonderful," she purred. "I feel wonderful."
"Ok," Bill said, and it was. "Shouldn't you go back to work?"
Jill frowned. Should she? The thought of leaving this feeling behind was horrible, but so was the thought of upsetting Bill. "Is that what you want?" she asked tentatively.
Bill silently considered her question and she took the opportunity to bask in his glory. If she was to be deprived soon, she wanted to experience as much of it as she could right now. Impulsively, Jill reached out and touched his arm. When they made contact, the hairs on her arm rose and she gurgled involuntarily.
"What are you doing?" Bill asked sharply and she immediately withdrew her hand and apologized. That seemed to help him make a decision.
"Ok, Jill, I suppose you can come with us until we figure this out."
She whooped with joy. She was gonna be with Bill more! The other woman nodded sagely and they pulled away from the curb. Bill's attention was focused on the road and Jill took the opportunity to examine him. The hair on the nape of his neck, the slightly sweaty sheen over his skin, the slow rising and falling of his chest... Jill couldn't pinpoint anything unusual about him, but his presence was overwhelming her ability to think.
"...at the library?" the woman was asking. How long had she been talking? She seemed amused by Jill's current state. "Jill?"
"Yeah?" she said dreamily.
"How long have you been working at the library?"
Jill sighed and slouched back in her seat. "Couple of years. It's nice. Bill, what is going on with you?"
He hesitated for a second before apparently making up his mind to explain it. He told her that he been given a gift from an angel that made him supernaturally charismatic and likeable. Jill was dimly aware that in a different context she would assume he was crazy, but she knew what he was saying was true. He finished the story and she frowned, already missing his beautiful voice. She had to hear more, so she tried to think of another question.
"Are you..." Jill paused, her mind sluggish. After a struggle, she finally thought of something. "Who is this with you? Is this your girlfriend?"
The woman laughed and Jill laughed too, her giddiness erupting involuntarily. "This is Amber," Bill explained. He shared a strange look with Amber before continuing. "I suppose she's my girlfriend, kind of. She's the reason I'm like this."
"Like what?" Jill asked. She just wanted to hear him talk.
"Uh, having this effect on you. You know, where you're all spacey and stuff? You know you're acting really out of it, right?" Bill's voice was tinged with concern and Jill's heart melted to think that he would worry about her.
"Yeah, I'm fine," she said softly. "I guess it's a little weird how good I feel. I like it, though. I don't want it to stop."
"No shit," Amber said with a dry chuckle. That was probably meant to be at least a little insulting but it didn't bother Jill. Suddenly she was alone in the car; they had parked and gotten out without her noticing it. Feeling a deep ache where Bill's presence had been, she scrambled out of the car and stood next to him.
"Where are we?" she asked dreamily.
"My house," Bill said. His voice sounded like the chime of a bell and Jill shivered involuntarily. He took her hand and her mind went blank, soaking in the pure luxurious bliss of physical contact with him. Amber and Bill were talking about her but she wasn't paying attention. She barely noticed as they led her into the house and closed the door behind her.
What do they do with Jill?
