Chapter 6 by Merlin678 Merlin678

Further north?

Further north, to the town of Darry.

Brindlewood Tavern Stables

"His own daughter..." Garrick muttered, trying and failing to supress a laugh. He approached his horse and patted the beast's shoulder, still chuckling. He was no virgin, but the barkeep's daughter was the best woman he had ever slept with. He almost considered going back for her, to bring her with him on his journey, but he knew it would have been the folly of youth. He was riding to join Robb Stark, and for all he knew, to the join a war. He had asked no questions about the Starks on his journey, nor heard any rumours, but something in his gut told him that the young Lord of Winterfell would not have stayed idle, and had most likely travelled south.

Darry

It was that thought that remained at the forefront of his mind as he rode on for the next few days. By the time he reached the town of Darry, a good week's distance from King's Landing, he decided to ask around. His first order of business was to resupply his food and water his horse, and so he made his way to the local stables. It was a long building, built of thick oak timbers with a slanted roof of the same material. There were several workers going about their jobs, most seemed to be boys no older than twelve or thirteen. One boy, a little older than the others, dressed in dirty, ragged clothes, approached Garrick.

"Can I help you, m'lord?" The boy asked, his gaze carefully low so as not to look Garrick in the eyes. It was a sign of respect to a lord, and one Garrick was not familiar with at all.

"I... aye, lad." He slid down from his saddle, taking a copper penny from his coin purse and handing it to the boy, who stared at it with wide, eager eyes. "I'm looking for information."

"What sort of information, ser?" He seemed curious, though Garrick expected that he wanted more money.

"I want to know if you, or anyone around here, has heard anything about the new Lord Stark. Something about his army, maybe?"

He nodded quickly "Yes, ser, I have."

"What did you hear?"

He did not answer, instead just holding his hand out expectantly. Garrick sighed, handing the boy two more pennies, earning him a smile from the boy. "They're calling him the Young Wolf. I heard he fights on the back of his direwolf."

"That's not information." Garrick raised an eyebrow "That's rumour."

"Alright, alright!" The boy's grin faltered for a moment before returning just as quickly.

"He went to Riverrun, it's west of here. They say he fought against the Kingslayer and won."

Garrick looked at the boy in surprise. "He did?"

"Yes, m'lord."

"I see." He tried not to react much, not wanting to show loyalty to the Starks in a town that could well be against him. "Where can I go to resupply? It seems I'm going west."

The boy thought for a moment "There's a market, or I can take you to the store. For another penny, m'lord."

Garrick sighed, but it was good natured. He could have found his way to the market or the store easily enough, but the boy was likely an orphan, and he wanted to help. "Alright. Take me to the store and I'll pay you when we get there."

He hitched his unnamed horse in the stables and followed the stablehand through the winding streets of Darry. It was not a big town, but it sat just south of the Trident, directly on the Kingsroad, making it a regular stop for anyone travelling to or from King's Landing. It was not long until they reached the store, where Garrick bought more supplies and a few apples for his horse. He was about to return to the stables and set off once again when he saw the boy staring hungrily at a baker's stall in the market. He had to admit, the pastries looked good, so he approached the baker and bought two. He tossed one to the stablehand, who caught it and began to devour it.

"I can find my own way back, lad." He said with a smile, turning and walking back in the direction of the stables.

To Riverrun
