Chapter 49

And then...
Try to change the subject
"My Lady, perhaps we should return to the castle," you tell her. "The sooner I can continue the investigation with this new information, the sooner you will be exonerated."
"Of course, Sire," she says, fully regaining her composure. "I have spent enough time hiding in this meadow, at any rate. As I cannot help directly with identifying Anwar's true assassin, I can at least ensure that my fellow Kingsguard are not busy with what should be my own duties." She goes to retrieve the rest of her belongings.
"Whenever you are ready, then. Oh," you continue, a thought occurring to you. "I spoke briefly with young Jacques, the stable boy, when I was preparing to leave. He wished very much for me to tell you that he believes in your innocence, and he is confident your name will be cleared."
You turn to summon Steelheart, but then hear a small noise from behind you, where Trina was. Your heart rate quickens suddenly, as it sounded exactly like a body hitting the ground! Spinning about, you see that she has slumped to her knees, her shoulders quivering. "Trina!" you call, forgetting to refer to her as "My Lady" or something similar. "Have you been hurt?"
As you rush to her side, she looks up at you, tears streaming down both her cheeks. "...forgive me this w-weakness," she whispers, barely able to make the words through her sobs.
You cannot stop yourself from throwing your arms around her and pulling her into a tight embrace. You have no idea why the faith of a child should be the blow which fells her after she has endured all manner of torment, but whatever the reason, your heart goes out to her as never before. "Not once in all the time I have known you have you ever shown weakness," you tell her, stroking her golden hair away from her face. "I see none in you at this moment either. But if strength is what you need, Trina, I beg of you to let me offer what I have to give."
If you expected that Trina might break down sobbing, or otherwise submit to her emotions, then you have made the mistake of assuming that she is something other than extraordinary. As you pull back to look into her eyes, you can see the deep pain and despair hidden deep within; but when she closes them she does not collapse crying into your embrace. Instead, she places her hands upon your shoulders, bows her head slightly, and appears to quite literally regain her inner strength by leaning upon you, her composure slowly returning. She rises to her feet once again, and you stand with her. When she opens her eyes again, though the streaks of tears remain on her cheeks, no more threaten to fall.
Her cheeks flush slightly, something that with her fair complexion she cannot completely hide no matter how she may try. You can tell that she is about to ask your forgiveness once again... and you have the sudden, almost unstoppable urge to silence her lips with your own!
Do you give in, or the urge back down?
