An Unsettling Encounter

Sue Storm walked through the halls of the Baxter Building, the faint hum of the building’s machinery a constant reminder of its advanced technology. She had been feeling off lately—a persistent fatigue that no amount of rest seemed to cure. The world around her seemed colder, sharper, as though reality itself had shifted in some imperceptible way.

What is wrong with me? she thought, her fingers brushing against the cool metal of the wall for balance. She’d chalked it up to stress, the endless juggling of responsibilities as a hero, mother, and wife. But deep down, she knew something was amiss.

Turning a corner, Sue nearly collided with a tall, dark figure. Startled, she stepped back, her hand instinctively going to her chest.

“Oh! I’m sorry,” she began, but her words faltered as she looked up.

The man standing before her was unlike anyone she’d ever seen. His presence was magnetic, his features sharp and refined. His eyes, dark and piercing, seemed to look straight through her, peeling back layers of her soul.

“No apology necessary,” he said, his voice smooth as silk. There was an accent to his words, faint but unmistakable. “The fault is mine.”

Sue felt a chill run down her spine. Who is this man? she wondered, her heart pounding in her chest. There was something predatory about him, something that set her instincts on high alert. And yet, she couldn’t look away.

Are you lost?” she asked, forcing herself to maintain composure.

The man smiled, a faint, enigmatic curve of his lips. “Not at all. I was just… admiring the architecture.”

“The architecture?” Sue repeated, raising an eyebrow. “This is a private facility. You shouldn’t be here.”

“Ah, but sometimes, the most interesting places are those one isn’t meant to see,” he replied. His gaze lingered on her, and for a moment, Sue felt as though the air had been sucked out of the room.

Shaking off the sensation, she straightened her posture. “I’m going to have to ask you to leave.”

The man inclined his head, a gesture of mock submission. “Of course. Forgive my intrusion. I’ll take my leave.”

As he turned to walk away, Sue couldn’t help but feel that she’d just encountered something… or someone… far beyond her understanding. The faint scent of earth and decay lingered in the air, and a shiver ran down her spine.

Who was that? she wondered, the question echoing in her mind as she continued down the corridor, her thoughts heavy with unease.
