Chapter 16

What's next?

Silvia meets Margot

Silvia had spent the rest of the afternoon unpacking boxes. That came to a halt when she overheard Helen mentioning a library. A library? In this cavernous, dust-ridden relic? The thought was irresistible. Her love for knowledge, honed by years of academic triumphs, compelled her to find it.

Pushing open a set of heavy oak doors, she stepped into a room that seemed frozen in time. Shelves of books stretched to the ceiling, a ladder leaning precariously against them. A worn velvet chaise sat near a fireplace, and a solitary lamp on the desk cast a dim golden glow. It was as though the library had been waiting for her.

Silvia inhaled deeply, the scent of old paper and leather filling her nostrils. Her fingers brushed across the spines of the books as she walked, a smile tugging at the corners of her lips. Her academic mind was already cataloging the possibilities of what treasures might lie within when a voice interrupted her thoughts.

“You have a thing for dusty old books, don’t you?”

Silvia froze, her hand pausing mid-reach. Slowly, she turned, her rational mind preparing a dozen explanations for what she might see. But none of them included the ethereal woman standing near the fireplace, her form shimmering faintly in the low light.

“I’d say it’s endearing,” the woman continued, her voice smooth as silk. “But it’s also a little... lonely, don’t you think?”

Silvia’s eyes narrowed. “Who are you?”

"I’m Margot. Your great-aunt."

Silvia crossed her arms, her brow furrowing. “Margot. Right. And you just... materialized out of thin air?”

“Correct,” Margot purred, stepping closer. “You’re quick. I like that.”

Silvia’s rational mind scrambled for an explanation. “You’re some kind of hologram, aren’t you? Advanced tech. Maybe there’s a projector hidden in the walls. Speakers behind the shelfs.”

Margot laughed, a low, melodious sound that sent a shiver down Silvia’s spine. “Oh, darling, I’m much older than holograms. Shall I prove it?”

The woman smiled, stepping forward with an elegance that seemed almost otherworldly.

“I know you, Silvia, the brilliant, driven eldest sister. Top student, destined for greatness. Yet...” She tilted her head, her gaze piercing. “Something’s missing.”

Silvia straightened, her tone sharp. “Nothing’s missing. I’m fine.”

“Really?” Margot drawled, circling her like a predator sizing up its prey. “No special someone? No great love stories? Not even a fleeting romance?”

Silvia’s cheeks flushed. “Only once, years ago. Now, I don’t have time for that kind of distraction.”

Margot chuckled, her voice rich with amusement. “Oh, darling, you are such a treasure. All brains and no heart, is that it? How boring.”

Silvia bristled, her jaw tightening. "It's not boring. I call it efficient."

Margot leaned closer, her tone dropping to a conspiratorial whisper. “But efficiency doesn’t keep you warm at night, does it?”

Silvia’s rational mind scrambled for footing. “I don’t need anyone else. My work is enough.”

Margot’s smile deepened, her eyes gleaming with mischief. “So you tell yourself. But efficiency doesn’t set your pulse racing, does it? It doesn’t make you feel alive.” She leaned in, her lips brushing Silvia’s ear as she added, “I could change that. Pray tell, don’t you wonder, deep down? What it would feel like to be desired? To lust after someone? To lose control, just once?”

Silvia’s breath quickened, a flicker of doubt breaking through her composure.

Margot stepped closer, her cool fingers brushing against Silvia’s hair, tightly combed back into a ponytail. “I could show you, you know. What it’s like to truly feel.” Her gaze locked onto Silvia’s, her voice a soft, seductive purr. “All you have to do is let me in. Still think I’m a hologram?” Margot teased, her voice like velvet.

Silvia swallowed hard, her voice hoarse. “I think ... I think I need more data.”

"Oh! You'll get all the data you need. And more."

Before Silvia could respond, Margot's form shimmered and shifted. Silvia’s eyes widened as Margot’s figure seemed to dissolve, flowing toward her like mist.

“No—wait—” Silvia stammered, stepping back, but it was too late.

Margot’s laughter echoed in her ears as the ghostly presence enveloped her, cool and weightless yet profoundly invasive. Silvia’s mind reeled, her sense of self flickering as Margot whispered, “Don’t worry, darling. I’ll make you feel better. Stronger. Freer.”

For a moment, everything was silent. Then Silvia gasped, her knees buckling as she gripped the edge of the desk for support. When she straightened, her reflection in the nearby mirror caught her eye.

Her own face stared back, but her eyes... her eyes held a new glint, a spark of something untamed and dangerously alive.

And somewhere deep within her mind, Margot purred contentedly, “Oh, this will be so delightful.”
