Chapter 40 by MichaelChaseLit MichaelChaseLit

A date? He actually got one? The hell?

Date Night… wait, like actually?!

My stomach was doing jumping jacks as I got to the apartment building. I got into the elevator and clicked my floor. I eyed the taped-over button as I rose. My second, incredibly illegal job! Just a click away! Fuck. That didn’t help my nerve issues.

I entered the apartment and found a sleeping Kenzie on the couch. She was as spread-out as possible on her back, mouth wide open and drooling onto herself. I considered taking a picture, but considering the tank-top she wore was… low-cut, I didn’t want it to seem like I was taking a pervy pic or something. I just let her sleep and went to my room.

My room was ghostless. Vanessa was nowhere to be seen… which was kind of nice, as selfish as that sounds. I didn’t have time for any drama or anything sexual.

Wait, now that I think about it, do I have to stop doing stuff with Vanessa? I hadn’t even considered the idea. Oh, fuck; did I already cheat on Cait when I let her suck me off yesterday? Now I felt like an asshole. How long do you have to be into a relationship before you can reveal sexually active ghosts?

No time to sit on that. I looked at my clothes (still contained in a bag, since I hadn’t taken the time to put them in a closet). I had nothing nice?! Fuck!

I wore the nicest jeans I could find (hoping the wrinkles weren’t too noticeable) with a kinda decent looking button-up shirt on top. Luckily, I stopped in the bathroom to pee because I noticed I had begun to get some unseemly stubble.

I quickly shaved. I found a use for my power; if I flexed by face, I could shave much quicker without fear of cutting myself. Not very exciting, but helpful on a time crunch.

When I got to the living room, Kenzie had woken up. She was watching some Russian cartoon on the television. It looked super old; like, I’d guess it was something from the Soviet Union-era (my history knowledge was lacking, so maybe I’m wrong).

Kenzie smiled when she saw me. “Oh, hey, Michael! I didn’t see you come in.”

“You were asleep on the couch, I didn’t want to wake you.”

She focused her attention back on the show. Suddenly, a second (nude) Kenzie entered the room. Kenzie 2 had a bag of chips in her hand. She waved and winked as she passed, handing the bag to Kenzie 1 before disappearing.

Kenzie, now being the only one in existence, put a finger to her lips in a shushing manner. “Let’s keep that a secret between us, yes? Kate hates when I use my power for stuff like that.”

I shrugged. “Fine by me. I have to go, though; I have a date with that girl.”

Kenzie wolf-whistled. “Good job, man! If you bring her back here, let me know. I want to get a look at this gal you’ve got yourself.”

“I don’t imagine I’ll be bringing anyone home, it’s a first date.”

Kenzie grinned. “Never say never, friend.”

I was suddenly even more nervous as I entered the hallway. Dammit, Kenzie….

I was approaching my van until I realized something: my van looked like shit. To be fair, I did get it from a strange homeless guy, but even then I couldn’t help and notice how cruddy it was. It looked like I was going to pick up kids with the offer of candy after the date.

I decided to park a couple blocks away from the restaurant. I walked the rest, using the time to practice talking to an imaginary Cait. About halfway there was when I realized I wasn’t very interesting.

I saw Cait standing outside the restaurant, playing on her phone. I shouldn’t say ‘saw’; it was closer to ‘was awestruck by’. Cait was wearing the cutest green dress; it was casual, but still looked absolutely fantastic. The green accented her red hair perfectly. When her eyes met mine, I considered running the other direction.

Something crazy happen… her eyes lit up when she saw me. She was genuinely excited to see me. She walked up and gave me a hug, squeezing me tight. I was still too stunned to return the sentiment.

Cait pulled away from the hug, taking my hands in hers and looking up at me with a concerned expression. “Hey, I’m sorry, was it too early for hugging? I don’t date much, so-“

“No, no, no; that’s not it! I just… you, ah, look quite pretty.” I reassured her the best I could. Her concern turned to joy. She pulled me by the hand back towards the restaurant. I looked up at the sign; ‘New Lovus Deli’.

“Why do they call it that?” I asked, looking up at the sign.

“Huh?” Cait followed my gaze and stared at the sign as well. “‘New Lovus Deli’? Well, it is a deli….”

I shook my head. “No, the ‘New’ bit; this isn’t, like, New York. It’s just Lovus. Not new, not old; just Lovus. Are they trying to say it’s new to being open? Because that ‘date established’ is from over fifteen years ago, which I think disqualifies it from calling itself new.”

Cait snorted, then giggled heartily.

“What?” I asked.

“You’re cute, Michael.” She squeezed my hand softly and pulled me inside the restaurant.
