Greg insisted, and Noah had to relent

He tried to ignore the sinking feeling in his gut, the one that told him that Greg wasn’t the kind of man to take no for an answer. Greg’s eyes narrowed slightly, and he took a step closer. “I’ll go hunting whether you like it or not,” he said slowly. “I know I agreed to earn my keep, but I don't have to do it your way. I can do more on my own, without you holding me back.”

The words hung in the air between them, heavy and full of meaning that Noah couldn’t quite grasp. There was a challenge there, an unspoken threat that made the hairs on the back of his neck stand up.

Greg nodded, his face still unreadable. “Of course. I know what I’m doing, Noah.” He turned to leave, his heavy footsteps echoing through the living room and disappearing down the hall. Noah stood there for a long time, staring at the closed door, wondering if he had made the right choice—or if he had just opened the door to a world of trouble.

But it was too late now, Noah sighed, turning back and getting ready to scavenge alone.
