Chapter 3 by yent yent

Where has Tess arrived?

At a D&D session

Tess knocked at the door in front of her. A moment later, it swung open, revealing a lanky femboy. Tallish, short-haired, and with a hint of a jawline, he was about as masculine as femboys could get—which is to say you could almost guess that he wasn’t a girl at first glance.

“Hey River,” Tess said, stepping in—then letting out a happy little moan as she felt the AC wash over her.

“Hey.” he said with a smirk, then called into the living room, “Alright, now that late-ass is here, we can get started.” Tess glanced over into the living room and saw that indeed, the rest of the group was already present. They called out in greeting to her, teasing her for being late.

“Not my fault!” Tess retorted with a grin. “Chloe was being a bitch as usual.”

After pulling off her sandals, Tess padded over into the living room and hopped down into her usual place: sitting cross-legged on the carpet in front of the coffee table. Nissa—a short girl, with long brown hair, thick glasses, and a pair of massive tits that strained the fabric of her turtleneck—also favored sitting on the floor, while Hana and Lily usually took the couch.

The others already had their stuff out, so Tess quickly got her character sheet—which was just an app on her phone—and her dice out and ready. River took his seat on the opposite side of the coffee table, his DM screen already set up.

“Right,” he said. “Who remembers what happened last time?”

“We were tracking down that merchant who scammed our wizard friend,” said Nissa, consulting her notes. She was usually the best by far at notetaking among the party. “We realized that she must have fled to the dwarven stronghold up in the foothills, and so we started travelling to follow her. We got ambushed by some raiders, but defeated them pretty easily. And then we spotted that cave once we got into the foothills, and we were in the middle of deciding whether to go in.”

“Yep, well done,” said River. “As you said, you’ve now entered the Mar’mego Foothills. It’s about half a day’s walk from the stronghold yet, but you’ve stopped on account of Rayna spotting a cave in the base of a nearby hill.”

Rayna was Hana’s character—an elven ranger with perception skill so high they liked to joke she could see into the future. Hana started speaking as soon as River gave her the floor, falling into character immediately. Despite her normally shy demeanor, the diminutive asian girl was an enthusiastic roleplayer, and had a real talent for putting on her character’s voice.

“It does us no harm to at least look, Tandry!” she said. Tandry was Nissa’s character, a gnome wizard with a nervous disposition. She’d been the major dissenting voice against going to the cave last session. “There’s no way out of the stronghold except through this very valley, so that merchant isn’t likely to escape. We have all the time in the world!”

“What if the ground over there is unstable?” Nissa retorted, speaking as Tandry. “You never know around caves! The ground could give way beneath our feet and we’d fall to our deaths!”

“Then let me go look,” Tess suggested, also now speaking in character. “I haven’t used my ring today, so if I do fall, I could get away easily.”

Tess’s character was Calith, a tiefling rogue. A few sessions ago she’d acquired a magic ring that let her cast a short range teleportation spell once per day.

“That’s smart,” said Lily, forcing a gruff voice. Nissa discreetly rolled her eyes.

Lily’s character was a bit… different. Toras was a goliath barbarian—and a male one. Not a session went by where Lily didn’t go out of her way to remind the group of how Toras only wore a short loincloth, or how big and rippling his muscles were, or how he rarely bathed and had a powerful masculine musk. It was pretty embarrassing to watch. They probably wouldn’t have put up with it if it weren’t for the fact that Lily was a very talented artist, and liked to frequently post the rather… interesting… art she drew of her character in the group’s discord server.

Despite the incentive to keep her around, actually roleplaying with the pudgy goth could get a bit awkward. They’d mostly gotten used to it, though. Mostly.

“Right…” Tess said slowly. “Well, any objections?”

Even Nissa had to shake her head no, so Tess looked up at River and said, “Alright, I’m going to walk over to the cave. I’ll do my best to stay light on my feet and to be ready in case anything happens.”

“Sure,” River said. “Why don’t you give me a perception check as you get nearer?”

Tess tossed a d20 into the dice tray on the coffee table, checked the result, added up her modifiers, then reported, “Fifteen.”

What happens at the cave?
