“Oh come on, please! It’s only like two minutes out of your way!”

“I told you, I’m already late.”

“Then being a bit later doesn’t matter as much!”

Chloe fixed Tess with a glare. “You know, if you actually had a job, you might realize just how not true that is…”

Tess looked up at her sister pleadingly. Six years older than Tess’s nineteen, Chloe had always been the more successful of the two at… well, just about everything. Since that “everything” included finances, Chloe was the only one of the two with a car.

Tess continued to give her best puppydog eyes to the taller girl. Chloe scoffed, frowned, then finally sighed. “I’ll take you to the gas station on Washington,” she said. “You can walk the last couple blocks yourself.”

“Yes! Thank yo—”

“Don’t” Chloe interrupted, “make me change my mind. Come on; we’re leaving right now or not at all.”

Tess shut right up, silently following her sister out to her car. It was baking inside, having been left out in the Los Angeles sun, and so Chloe quickly rolled all the windows down as she pulled out. Several minutes later, Tess jumped out onto the curb, barely clearing the door before Chloe sped away again without a word.

Tess started walking. It was only a few blocks to her destination, but the mousy girl had the meager stamina one might expect of someone who had been up until three in the morning playing World of Warcraft (and occasionally tabbing out to finger herself to porn of Thrall and Varian Wrynn), and the August sun beating down on her was hot. By the time she made it there, there was sweat trickling down in front of her ears.

Well, better arriving a bit sweaty than not at all.
