Chapter 13 by GyroscopicGraphite GyroscopicGraphite

Why?

Why did I take it?

The two slowly walked down the empty halls, the only sound being that of their footsteps on the tiled floor. Her arm was around his neck, her hand held in place by his. His other arm was wrapped around underneath her armpit and around her stomach for support. Jehnova faced forward, but was always taking glances at the poor girl in his arms. She was facing away from him, so all he could see was the long hair adorning the back of her neck. She must be pissed, or maybe ashamed? I wouldn't know, he thought to himself. She had calmed down a bit, at least as far as he could tell, so he was able to feel at least a little relieved. Still, he assumed she hated him. After all, this was his fault, wasn't it?

She wasn't actually angry at him, not in the slightest. As far as she knew he was just a bystander. And yet, he took notice, action, offered help. She didn't understand. The person she was actually angry at, was herself. He was right about her being ashamed, though. Ashamed that despite her anger and fear, plastered on her face was the widest, stupidest grin she she had ever had. She couldn't help it. It just felt so nice to be held in his arms. To be supported and held up, not to any standards or expectations, simply just held.

She felt weightless, lighter than she had ever felt. She realized just how heavy the responsibilities and expectations had weighed on her over the years. It was like she had been running for all her life, and just sat down for the very first time. Despite only being slightly less than a head shorter than him, she felt small next to him, but in a good way, like she knew no harm could come to her as long as he was holding her. She knew it was dangerous, that she'd have to stand back up eventually and continue lifting the burden she never realized she was carrying. But that only made this short moment even sweeter. Not that it stopped the last embers of desire in her body from wanting more, to hug him tight and take in all his warmth.

He could never learn of this, of course. No one could. Absolutely not. The notion that anyone could find out of the true driving forces behind her the day's events terrified her. Although she didn't know that the glasses were really the culprit, she wondered amist the dizzying flood of emotions what exactly happened to them. Then she realized that it didn't really matter to her. Not anymore. Right now, she wanted nothing more than to stay where she was, held in Jehnova's arms. Of course, she knew it had to come to an end eventually.

They finally arrived at the infirmary. He brought her over to one of the nearby beds. She looked up at him for the first time since they had started walking. She knew it was time for him to go back to his job, but still, she smiled at him and said, "Thank you." Jehnova looked away, off into the distance as he sat her down. It took all her strength just to let go, but she did. She felt like there was something... off about him. He looked sad, pained, like he did something wrong. She didn't know what exactly happened, or what he was thinking, but he did. He knew that it was all his fault. He knew that this was an experience she didn't ask to have. And he felt awful about it.

He looked at her he pulled the covers up to her neck with an expression of guilt. He stroked her cheek a little before taking his leave. She was confused by him. She didn't understand why he looked so guilty, like this was his fault. What she did understand was that in the few minutes of walking, the intense heat within her loins had disappeared. And yet, still her heart beated like a drum and she felt so warm inside. She basked in the afterglow of the feeling of his care for as long as she could. But she had to face the truth eventually.

The meeting with Jehnova. The burning lust within her. The walk to the infirmary. The joy from radiating within her very soul. The moment of respite, without expectation or stress or responsibilities.

It was over. It was gone.
