Chapter 1 - Brawl

Link, Champion of Hyrule, The Hero Awoken from a Long Slumber, stood off to the side on the battle grounds’ stage. Pulling the string on his bow back as far as it would go he aimed at his target who was occupied with another foe. Today he had left his own land of Breath of the Wild to enjoy some no stakes sparring matches in the shared land of Brawl and things were going well.

The last battle was a one on one match with an incarnation of himself from a time past. His other self, or ancestor, he wasn’t sure how it actually worked wore a green tunic much like his own Hero of the Wild armor set that he chose to wear for his current battle against Kirby the pink little alien thing and Princess Peach. The last match had ended with him shooting an arrow right after lobbing a few bombs, this one a three way free for all was much more intensive.

Across the stage Link watched the two duel, his damage percentage was already high and with his health stock being down to his last he thought it best to try a safer approach. The Princess floated off the ground, doing an impressive kick with a high knockback to Kirby, the pink balloon with a mouth. Seeing his time to strike, Link let go of the arrow, letting it shoot through the air at the girl dancing in the air in order to hit her in the back. No sooner had he let go of his bow he tapped his hand to the Sheikah slate to pull out a glowing blue spherical bomb for a follow up attack like he had done many times before.

The plan was to hit her twice with the ranged attacks and then dash in for a heavy strike and even if the first and second shot missed, there would be a great chance of his second foe of taking the hit as they recovered from Peach’s ****. The problem with plans though, is that they often change or even fail at first contact. The pink dress wearing Princess was so light, floating about the battle ground that he didn’t seem to have a real chance to hit her. She leapt higher into the air, allowing the arrow to strike true on Kirby, but the little puff ball just sucked in air and flapped his tiny stub arms as he used his own form of flight to keep himself from falling into the abyss.

With the bomb in hand Link threw the explosive device up into the air above him to at least try to catch the young woman in the blast, but yet again she floated backwards. With Kirby coming closer it moved her closer into his range, but in a burst of speed she came down upon him, kicking him in the head multiple times. It hadn’t been enough to send him flying, but it was enough that the attack created a little space between them. ‘Wow she is tough.’ Link thought looking just past his shield that he had raised just in time to deflect a thrown object. ‘Was that a turnip?’

Earlier that day Princess Peach warped over to the Land of Brawl, needing an escape from her duties. Things had been nothing but work, work, work since the last time she had been kidnapped by the Koopa King. She had hoped to set up a party with Mario and the gang, but nothing had come of it and she was just sick of feeling listless… something close to helpless. The week before she had been captured by one of Bowser’s nephews of all people and she had been too weak to stop them, to save herself. Here in Brawl she had power, she had the skills to compete.

A smile on her face as she held her own against Kirby and beat the snot out of Link, she felt elation flow through her. Link was some sort of Champion from his land, she wasn’t sure of what exactly, there just seemed to be too many of him in Brawl for her to ever keep it straight. Whenever she or anyone went back to their own lands the memories of this place grew hazy, leaving the feelings from those memories intact. Yet the second you stepped back here it all came rushing back. Delivering a can-can kick to the ever hungry creature from a place she heard called Dream Land, the three foot creature rocketed away. She had been floating around the battlefield to keep herself as mobile as possible, knowing the sheer arsenal Link could bring to bear meant her lead could be closed quickly. Even now as she finished what she hoped was a knockout move she had to leap into the air to keep from being hit by one of his arrows. ‘You sir will have to do better than that!’ She thought, her smile only growing as she pulled out her parasol to move closer to him without giving him an opening to cut into her with his sword.

Princess Toadstool didn’t hear the sound of Kirby being defeated, but didn’t dare look behind her and lose sight of Link who was holding one of those glowing bombs. They didn’t deal nearly as much damage as a bob-omb, but she wasn’t exactly in perfect condition to just take the hit either. The nagging feeling of Kirby sneaking up on her did make Peach hesitate, turning her head slightly before having to jerk backwards in the air to avoid the bomb Link tossed into the air, leaving her feeling a flutter in her chest, knowing danger was creeping closer behind her. Letting go of her frilly umbrella she darted closer to the blonde blue eyed hero, here gravity didn’t hinder her so much. It was similar to how it was back home, but here she could do so much more with it. ‘Let us see what you think of my Piston Kick!’

Her deep pink four inch stiletto heeled foot came smashing down into the short man’s face, causing him to slide backward, but not lose his footing. She found it so funny, her Mario, the man that always had to save her was only five foot one. While this champion from another land was five foot two. Yet here she was taller than both of them, six foot one in her four inch heels was practically powerless to compete with anyone unless it was here or… ‘Racing, tennis, golf, baseball or…’ Her mind wandered for just a split second, the loss in focus almost having her unprepared for the charge that the Hylian was about to make. Instead she threw a turnip at him.

The smile on her face faltered slightly as he deflected her root vegetable, but wasn’t going to let him take her momentum, dashing in she thought about grabbing the smaller man to throw him behind her in order to take whatever was about to happen behind her, but as she closed in a person sized brick came falling down from the sky. It didn’t come down on her head, the morphic blob that was Kirby had come down behind her. Had she not dashed forward it would have been the end of her, but instead the thing had clipped her, sending her careening into Link.

Eyes going wide Link saw the Princess’s gown flapping in the wind as she came colliding into him with her arms held out wide. The two fell to the ground in a tangle, her atop of him. It was something that he would have blushed heavily at with her large chest pressing into him, but in battle he could deal with this. Gripping his sword he was ready to push the blade upwards when he felt the ground sliding out from under him as the sound of a vacuum, the rushing wind filled his ears. Before he could do anything else he found himself falling into the open maw of Kirby, with Princess Peach flailing along with him.

Feeling bloated, something that just really didn’t happen often, Kirby waddled to the side of the stage as he tried to digest and take on some of the power of those he was fighting. Feeling something click inside of him he spat the two out. It hadn’t been the first time he had borrowed a little power from either of them in his time in Brawl. Yet it never felt like it did then, instead of a little green phrygian cap that he often got from eating ink or a pretty gold crown from swallowing Peach he instead had a green crown and instantly knew he could do both of their moves. He could hold out one of her toad populace as a shield and he had the knowledge to shoot the bow now in his possession.

Moments ago Link was floating in a black space, no up, no down, only a void like space that only let a single sense function, pain. Now he was free of it all, but was falling. Spinning around in the air to look back towards the side of the stage he felt as if he was falling slower than before. That could have given him enough time to hookshot his way back up, but everything just felt off. Not only was he falling slower, like he was lighter, he also felt weaker. Reaching for the hook shot to get to safety all he felt was soft fabric. All of it a big enough distraction to make his fall the final moment for his fight and an end to his good day.

At the same time Peach fell through the air, falling like a rock instead of her normal pace. The last thing she saw above here was two things, one that brought a scowl to her face, the other bewilderment. Above her on the edge of the stage was Kirby, waving his hand in the air and calling out to the two people falling. “HIIII!” The other was the oddest sight she had ever seen, the hylian boy was wearing her dress.
