Touching down

Things don't go to plan

As she soared through the sky, her communicator buzzed in her ear. "Valerie, are you there?"

"Hear you loud and clear.", she replied. So far, so good.

"Strong wind today. Be careful.", came the reply. She reflexively nodded in acknowledgement before realizing that anyone in the plane couldn't actually see her. She let out a nervous laugh - she was still getting used to the whole earpiece communicator thing.

She activated the device so she could respond. "Affirmative. Deploying parachute in 3...2..."

There was static in her ear, although she couldn't hear anything due to the wind in her ear. She decided to hit the release and deploy her parachute, causing her to slow down. It was then that she heard in her ear - "Wait, Valerie, danger of wind-"

"It's all right. I got-", she began to speak. To her alarm, her reply was cut short as she was violently tugged in one direction. Wind was whooshing all around her, and she began to veer dangerously off her planned descent. As she began to spin in the wind, she realized she had lost control.

"Valerie, come in!", she heard a faint voice in her ear, before she closed her eyes and lost consciousness.

Valerie felt a strange tickling sensation on the back of her neck. She tried to ignore it, for her sleep felt soooo good. She tried to go to sleep again, but the feeling persisted, and it slowly came to her that the tickling was something crawling on her skin.

"Eeeek!", she squealed reflexively, finally awake. She tried to bring her arms to her neck to swat the bug off, and realized that she couldn't. Thankfully, the bug seemed to notice and flew away, leaving her - wait, where was she exactly?

She looked around, and saw only darkness. After a while, her eyes adjusted and she realized she was hanging from a tree, her parachute still attached to her back. Worse, she had managed to get tangled in a large group of vines. She was effectively suspended in midair, bound from head to feet.

She tried to shake herself free, and to her horror only made things worse. She felt the vines constricting around her, blocking her circulation. She began to panic as she tried to think of how she could get out of this.

In her final moments of consciousness, she managed to bring her ear to her shoulder. She tried tapping the button on her earpiece, but before she could judge if she had been successful, she drifted back into the darkness.

Can Valerie get any help?
