Chapter 4

Where does Chloe go?
She goes to Oakville to meet a naked man
The ride to Oakville had taken longer than expected, and by the time Chloe got to Oakville, night had fallen. Overnight bag in hand, Chloe stepped off the bus into the quiet, dimly lit streets of Oakville, clack from her red-bottomed heels echoing against the pavement with each step. She glanced down at them — tall, black platform heels with signature crimson soles—and wondered briefly if they were too much. She’d worn them all day, thinking they'd make her look confident and professional, but now, as she made her way through the sleepy town at night, they suddenly felt a little too... bold.
She made her way to the hotel. Her day had been long, filled with travel, and nearly getting drool on her shoulder, and she was eager to get some rest before her early meeting with the mayor in the morning. As she entered the lobby, the hotel clerk, a middle-aged man with a thinning hairline, greeted her with a tired smile. The clerk behind the counter gave her an apologetic look as she approached. "I'm so sorry ma'am, but we seem to have overbooked. There are no vacant rooms available tonight."
Chloe's shoulders slumped. "Really? I had a reservation though. For Chloe Addison?"
The clerk nodded. "Yes, I understand. I'm terribly sorry. The only option I can offer is to share a room with another guest. It's just one other person - a man - and there's only one bed. It's that or I can try to find you a room at another hotel."
Chloe considered her options. She was only in town for the night to meet with the mayor in the morning. Sharing a room, even with a stranger, would be inconvenient but bearable for just one night.
"Alright, I can make that work for tonight," she said with a resigned sigh. It wasn't ideal, but it beat risking finding another hotel just for it to be full as well with no offer of a roommate.
The clerk handed her a keycard. "Thank you for understanding, Miss Addison. Room 412. The room you had reserved. The other guest is already there, so please try to be quiet when you enter."
Chloe took the keycard and slipped it into a pouch in her bag as she headed for the elevators, hoping the stranger she's sharing a room with doesn't mind her presence. She was no stranger to uncomfortable situations, and this wasn’t the first time she'd had to adapt to less-than-ideal circumstances. She found room 412 and, instead of swiping the card, carefully knocked on the door.
"Come in!" A man's voice called from inside, cheerful and lighthearted.
The room was dimly lit, but she could make out a single queen-sized bed and a small sitting area. A naked man sitting on the edge of the single bed, a small suitcase open beside him. He was thin, with unkempt hair and thick glasses that sat askew on his face. He was already looking at her as she entered.
"Hello there!" He stood up, extending a hand. "I was wondering when my roomie would arrive! Nigel, nice to meet you!"
"Chloe. The front desk said they had overbooked, so it looks like we'll be sharing for the night, if it's no bother to you."
"Oh, pish posh," Nigel said, waving his hand dismissively and sitting back down. "It’s not an inconvenience at all! I love meeting new people. We're going to have such a fun time getting to know each other! No need to be so formal! We're roomies now, we should be friends!"
He was certainly...enthusiastic. And a bit odd. Chloe made a mental note to keep to herself as much as possible for this brief shared stay.
"I'm just here for work actually," she said, keeping things businesslike. "I have a meeting with the mayor in the morning. I'll be out early, so I’ll try not to disturb you."
"Ah, the mayor! Big stuff, huh?" Nigel laughed, sitting back down on the bed. "I’m just here for a little comic book convention. Not as exciting as your gig, but it's still pretty cool."
Chloe gave him another polite smile. "Well it's nice to meet you, Nigel." Though she'd find their meeting even nicer if he had clothes on.
What's next?
