Hitchhiking
The pair walked hand in hand for about 10 minutes before they saw the sign for Route 66. They hadn't realized that it went right past the Arch.
As they approached the on-ramp for the highway, they saw several cars speed past. A few semi-trailers barreled down the road as well. Alice looked hesitant.
"Are you sure about this, Jack? Hitchhiking seems dangerous."
Jack paused to consider their options. "We could keep going on foot for a while, but it'll take us forever to make any real progress."
He glanced down the long stretch of highway. "I think we'll be okay if we're smart. Let's try to get a ride from a woman or a family."
Alice nodded, looking determined. "You're right. This was my idea, after all. I can't back out now."
Jack smiled and squeezed her hand reassuringly. They approached the shoulder and stuck out their thumbs.
After about 10 minutes, an older model sedan pulled over. The driver was a woman who looked in her twenties. She had light brown hair, a pretty face with blue eyes, high cheekbones, and full lips with red lipstick. She was wearing a green minidress that showed the tops of her full breasts and some cleavage. Her long legs were bare, and she wore leather cowboy boots.
"Where are you kids headed?" she asked kindly with a smile.
"As far west as you can take us, ma'am," Jack replied.
The woman nodded. "I'm going about 60 miles down 66. Hop in."
Jack opened the door for Alice and they climbed into the backseat. As the car accelerated back onto the highway, they exchanged excited glances. This was it - the start of their grand adventure!
