Dev Speaks to Shannon about Upcoming Events
Dev was irritated and wanted to let the frustration out. Then again, he could just distract himself with work - he remebered maintaining a good work ethic was important, and he could be seen slacking all the time.
He didn't hold it against Rose though; he saw her as an equal and if she wanted to be playful, she can. And her promise that she'd make the presentation exciting... he was interested what she had in mind.
Dev returned to his department and brought to their attention how he hadn't heard about the presentation, and only recently found out about the tennis league. He sat at his desk and asked Shannon specifically about it. "Is there anything else I'm missing? Anything I should know about that's coming up?"
"Well," Shannon replied, finally having a few minutes to spare for her trainee, "Business Development is cretainly an immportant part of training. There are a few things you could do. BD is basically doing things beyond just our billable clients.
So for instance, you could provide some Pro Bono legal advice. There's a Citizen's Advice just around the corner. Our firm usually helps them out with some brief legal advice. Nothing too specific or researched; you'll often find that being a lawyer, you've picked up on a lot of things that the general public wouldn't know. You could do this on Thursday.
There's also a Networking event happening tonight. One of the biggest ways of expanding your Business Development is by expanding your network. These events are very casual, you meet a bunch of other lawyers, accountants, business owners and the like in the area. Free food, meet and greet, talk about our firm and you never know, we might get some work out of it. And don't worry, it's not as stuffy as it sounds. It's really just a bit of professional socialising.
Let's see... besides those things, do you know about the Presentation?"
Dev took this all in and wrote it down on his calendar. "Yeah, Rose was telling me about it at lunch. It's this Friday."
"Yes, that's the Family Law presentation, but I was more talking about the one for our department. We've got one to do for Property Litigation as well, and that's in a couple of weeks. And guess who's going to be presenting!" Shannon said, twisting her neck and raising her eyebrows cheekily. She did double finger guns pointing at Dev.
"Of course," Dev said, "I'd love nothing more than that!" he responded just as sarcastically as Shannon laughed. He knew better than to call his superior cringe to her face.
"Well you're only a month in so don't worry, we'll all chip in. But it's a good project for you to take the lead on this. Make the slides, figure out a script and talk to the girls in the department. Maybe pay close attention to the one Rose is presenting and make notes on the sorts of things you should present, like day-to-day work, types of clients, and so on.
"Don't worry, I was planning on paying really close attention to Friday's presentation," Dev blurted, "So about that networking event tonight?"
"Speak to Susanne about it - she's going to that. Now if you'll excuse me," Shannon said, taking a sip of her coke and checking her dainty purple watch, "I have a Finance meeting with the partners."
Dev watched her get up and go, swishing her hips as she went. His eyes trailed her to the exit until they caught Susanne at her desk, and he walked over to her.
