Chapter 9 by Willow Tindersmith Willow Tindersmith

Do you go with Yutong's plan?

Sure, what could go wrong?

"I'll take those, but you better stay back so she doesn't get suspicious."

You watch as Yu pours a red drink with an obnoxious cherry aroma in one of your cups. Then she opens the other can and fills the other cup with a dark green liquid with a pungent chemical smell. "That one's for you."

You narrow your eyes. "Is this really safe to drink?"

"I fully trust Popple's professional Quenchologists. The other sodas from before were fine too, right?"

"I guess so," you reply, briefly curious what Yu would consider "not fine" given Pearl's reaction from earlier. Well, at least you don't have to pay ten dollars for two cups of beer again.

You make it to Pearl's spot on the dance floor without further interruptions and hand her the red drink.

She smiles at you for probably the first time this evening. "Finally. Long line at the bar?"

"Longer than it should be at those prices," you smile back.

"Cheers!" She gives her beverage a small taste, then drains it in one go. "Ooh cherries, my flavorite!" She breaks out in a giggle, then continues dancing as if she wasn't currently in the middle of a magical soda-enforced transformation.
One dance move has her reaching down to her ankles - as she comes up, her cargo pants come up her legs with her, fusing into a mini skirt.
With the next move, she puts her hands on her waist, gripping bare skin where there was just a hoodie in the way. That hoodie has become a white crop top with a pink college logo emblazoned over her bouncing boobs. Have those always been bouncing around so much?
As Pearl shakes her head around in circles, her loose blonde hair gathers itself into two ponytails that helicopter around her and eventually whip down to the small of her back.
She reaches in front of herself and grabs two pink pom-poms out of thin air, proceeding to flail around with such ferocity that it's a miracle nobody else gets hit. Perhaps "flailing" is also not the right word for it - her every move looks graceful and choreographed, like she's been doing this for years. Now you're just wondering who composed a full choreography for Random EDM Track #918, and why Pearl looks so damn good doing it.

However, you can't shake the nagging feeling that this evening would be even better without this voice in the back of your head that keeps asking you if breaking her trust like that was really a good idea. Of course, the devil on your shoulder is quick to answer that look how happy she is now, and the original voice replies with what about how original Pearl would have felt about that, and then your inner devil goes but original Pearl isn't here right now and you're like SHUT UP and drown both of them in green chemical flavor. That's right, you still had your own soda to drink, how could you forget about that?

After the expected chugging of the whole cup in one go, you feel the iconic Popple Quench fizz linger on your tongue, but as you inspect yourself for changes, there's nothing immediately standing out to you. Perhaps Get Lucky was one of the canceled regular flavor variants? With that smell and taste, you can't rule this explanation out, even if the aftertaste is unexpectedly pleasant.

Were you affected, and if so, how?
