Chapter 4 by Sixth Sixth

Who is it?

The quartermaster, an anthro horse

"Come in," you call cheerfully, playing the role of the ship's cook well.

Jack, the ship's quartermaster, carefully shoulders the door open, both hands full with a wicker basket of the morning's fishing, which he places on the counter top beside you. There's not much space in the kitchen galley and the muscle bound sailor fills most of it.

"We need to talk," rumbles the horse. He is dressed in simple fabrics, brown cloth trousers and a sleeveless shirt he has left open. The quartermaster is an interesting role on board any pirate ship. Jack was in charge of supplies. This also meant he was in charge of the cargo holds - after all, there is no point filling the hull with spice to smuggle if it meant there was no room for food for the pirates. The horse was very certainly your boss. That said, Jack had almost no say in the ship's course or piracy tactics; he didn't pick targets, didn't coordinate **** or spying.

You flash him a winning smile; still not sure how to treat him exactly but confident you need to keep him firmly on site. "Sure," you say warmly, "How can I help?" You're certainly holding his attention and this is a good thing.

"Shadow will soon call a feast", Jack explains without backing off to give you more space, "It's important to her and her beliefs. She'll talk to you about it before hand. She'll ask you to pull out all the stops and spoil every pirate on the ship." The anthro horse stays close to you, his powerful body dominating the small space of the galley kitchen. "I'm not saying you should disobey... just think carefully about your role as cook and the need for keeping our supplies healthy."

You nod, smile, keep your eyes locked on his eyes and wait for him to continue.

Jack lays a hand on your shoulder, "If you put on too much food for the feast then we'll run out of supplies. It's as simple as that. If you disappoint Shadow then it'll be terrible for you. Do you understand?"

The quartermaster is hard to read. In some ways he's giving you a useful heads up. In other ways you could consider this warning a threat. It's the anthro horse who controls the supplies after all. Your response will be important.

How do you handle the situation?
