Just another boring shift

You walk with a pep in your step, this job has been a breeze and you have been here for about six months now, couldn’t be easier. You grab a coffee from the office machine, with a book in one hand and the coffee in the other you are set for the next hour.

You walk into the monitoring room and take a seat, as you do a calm emotionless voice comes out of one of the speakers: “Welcome employee John, nothing unusual to report of prisoner 58008, who’s going by the usual schedule.”

A screen lights up showing you this buildings only occupant (expect when you sleep there in a special employee room, during long shifts), prisoner number 58008 and currently she’s in the gym room going through her routine.

You think back how lucky you were to get this gig, just being on hand in this high tech prison, there is rarely anything you need to do since it’s all automated, so you mostly do some reading and catch up on some TV shows, but for this you like to watch her, because you have gotten pretty bored of being bored, so in a strange way you have actually started gone full circle back to working. It’s especially not because when she’s doing her gym sessions, she wears a very tiny two piece black outfit, leaving her midriff, arms and legs bare.

You stare at the tall muscular fit short haired woman on screen, watch as she grunts and grits her teeth as she lifts really large weights, but nothing like what you have seen her lift in the introduction video on your first day of the job.

The reason why this woman is the sole occupant in this huge high tech prison is because prison 58008 otherwise known as Jane is a super villainess, one of the most dangerous one they say, but now she’s confined to this place and powerless. You remember watching the news while she took over a whole city and turned it into her personal party playground for almost a whole year, trapping it behind a barrier, it took a dozen super heroes to break through the barrier and take her down but that was over a year and half ago. Since then she has been serving out her sentence here, the trial was pretty speedy as next thing you knew she was in this special prison.

You watch her on screen as she does bicep curls, her heavily tattooed arms bulging with each rep, for an imprisoned super villain she’s not bad on the eye’s, looking like a muscular fitness model and her outfit doesn’t leave much for the imagination. You squint your eye’s and stare at her chest and you suspect that she might have some piercing there, but you aren’t sure and the resolution of the image isn’t enough so you can be sure.

You curse the low resolution and too boot, it doesn’t have any audio “So much for a high tech place.” you think, but guess it’s because of all the measures to keep her in. You pause and realize you are staring at her again, you get a bit red in the face and go back to your book as you shake your head over your own unprofessional-ism. She looks pretty intimidating, so you are sure you couldn’t get away with that if she saw you, but luckily for you there are a few thick walls of steal, concrete and some kind of special material between you and her, so as far as she knows, you don’t exist.

You go back to reading your book for a few minutes, then suddenly a red light starts blinking on the console in front of you, you look at it with curiosity, then get the binder which has all the codes. According to that it means equipment failure, you get super nervous and ask the computer which replies in a flat emotionless voice: “Prisoner number 58008 has damaged a speaker in the gym, after I instructed her that her allotted gym time was over, by throwing one of the lighter barbels at it, it now requires a replacement.”

You pause and then say out loud: “You want me to go into the same room as her!?”

It takes a few heavy minutes for the computer to reply: “No, prisoner 58008 as been sent several rooms over to read some books on anger management.”

“Oh” you say relieved and look at the monitor and notice her standing in the library room, banging on a closed door, with no noticeable affects, looking pretty pissed.

You get some more details from the computer, gather the replacement parts and head into the gym room, through a special tunnel that was just opened up. You look around the room, and it just looks like a normal gym, you find the weights she was lifting and you can lift one of them by using both your hands with a bit of strain. You put it away pretty proud of yourself, then put the one the prisoner just threw, in its proper place and replace the damaged speaker with relative ease.

You walk to the service entrance you just came through, look back and clap your hands for a job well done. “No muss, no fuss.” you think.

You get back and the service tunnel seems to disappear, but you get informed by the computer, that it has been reformed into several layers of wall. Making you relax and think: “Wow, this place really is high tech.”

You go back to reading and relaxing, after few minutes you her a flat female voice: “Hey you!”

You pause and set down your book, but realize that it’s not the voice of the computer, you look at the screen and staring straight into the camera is prisoner 58008.
