Chapter 2 by Tyff Tyff

What's next?

Summer job at Sam’s Store

It had only been a few days since I met Sam and my whole life had changed. I was eating dinner with my mom and dad that evening when I needed to let them know some big news about working with Sam. I was wearing one of the new outfits that I had bought from her store. I was a much bulkier flannel that did well of hiding my breasts as well as better fitting jeans. I looked like the same girl to them as I had always been though if I had been stripped naked they would have thought I was some sort of imposter or that I got plastic surgery. My dad broke my train of thought when he asked, “What’s on your mind, kiddo? You look like you have something to say.”

I cleared my throat and said, “I decided to get a summer job by working with Sam at the store she works at.” I would rather not tell them that she owns the store since they may ask questions.

My mom chimed in and asked, “Why don’t you want to work the summer program at the church? The kids will miss you dearly.”

I spoke up, “I was hoping to make a little extra cash before I left and I was technically volunteering with the church.”

My mom interjected that any form of independence be given to me as she said, “Don’t worry, honey! Your dad can make sure you get paid going from this point forward. Right, sweetie?”

My dad quietly said, “Honey…I can’t suddenly give our daughter a paid position without taking it up with HR first. I personally think she’ll do fine since Sam will be with her. She’s gonna be going off to school in a few months so we should give her a bit of preparation for that.”

I was surprised my dad even said anything remotely close to that. I watched him comfort my mom as he held her hand as she quietly sobbed about her little girl leaving the nest. My dad asked me, “So when’s the first day, kiddo?”

I continue to clear my plate and swallow what was in my mouth. I take a sip of water and say, “I can start as early as tomorrow is what Sam told me. So I’ll let her know I’m good to start my first shift.”

My dad gave me a high five and said, “Go knock ‘em, dead, Jay. Your mom is gonna be too bored with you being around the house.”

We both chuckled as she let out a sarcastic laugh. She said, “If your dad said it’s fine, then I’ll just need to adjust to the changes in my life.” I got up from the table and gave my mom a big hug. “Do your best out there tomorrow, sweetie. I’ll make you a yummy breakfast as well.”

What happens on her first day?
