Selphie Quimbane, Paladin of Helm (Fantasy)

Selphie wakes from her long rest at her campsite in the meadow by the creek. She’s wearing a long white nightshirt. Her armour and holy sword are laid out beside her, in short reach in case of wandering monsters. Before breaking camp, she prays to her patron deity Helm for guidance.

Her god does not often respond, but today he does. His voice thunders in her head. “Selphie, my faithful paladin, listen close. Graz’zt, the demon lord of forbidden pleasure is invading our lands. His horde of lustful fiends, lying incubi, and seductive succubi is streaming through the old goblin warrens in the Blue Forest. You must judge with righteousness and seal the demonic portal, slaying any monstrous demon that will stand in your way.”

Selphie nods. She knows her holy duty. The voice of her god is gone, but there’s an echo to her thoughts now, as though a channel is still open in her mind. She meditates for a minute. A voice that’s not quite right cackles and starts speaking. “Pinch yourself, Selphie.”

Is that the voice of her god? Couldn’t be. Selphie reaches to her bare thigh below the hem of her white nightdress and pinches her own skin. The pinch feels real. That voice couldn’t have been her god, could it? She hefts her holy sword. Now is the time to don her gleaming armour and do her holy duty.

Movement flickers in the trees. It reminds her of tiny demonic imps, flittering in the shadows. Perhaps the fiends have come to her.
