Chapter 19 by joplaya

Cross the bridge? Go off on your own? Confront Them?

Follow them across.

Walter shoots another smirking grin your way before he turns and follows Regina out onto the bridge; as the two walk away, you think about going off on your own, biting your lip nervously as you glance between the bridge and the duo making their way across it and then at the empty city streets around you. A shudder runs through you as the shattered windows and empty streets seem to stare back at you menacingly, you recoil and rush after Regina and Walter. The immense bridge creaks softly and sways a little in the gusting wind as the three of you hurry across it, but aside from that and the better view, the trip across is no more eventful than the trip through the city had been.

“The hospital is only about five, maybe six miles away from us now” Regina murmurs to you as the three of you finally rejoin Conrad on the far side of the bridge. “I used to work across the street from it so I can guide us there with no trouble” you nod vaguely in reply, only half listening to her words as she continues “We have to head about a mile and a half to the north and then angle back to the east but it should only take a few more hours for us to reach it” she shoots you a weak smile “Not much further now”

“Not much further now” you repeat dully, forcing yourself to smile back, despite the growing feeling of dread in your heart.

The city is older on this side of the wide river, older and smaller; gone are the other side’s towering apartments and condominiums, the wide city streets and the expensive boutiques. Around you now are tall, narrow brick houses crammed cheek to jowl with one another, each one having a tiny front yard and a small driveway. The narrow city streets are packed with abandoned vehicles, many with the skeletons of their owners still inside of them; you give a shudder as you pass through an intersection that is now little more than a cluster of burnt out cars and scorched skeletons.

“I hate walking” Regina muttered sulkily, massaging her calves gently, “I had forgotten just how much of this side of the city was built on the hills” you gasp in agreement, almost panting for air as the four of you pause for a momentary rest; it was the truth, the river split the city in half and while the other side was nearly table flat, this side rose up steeply from the river’s edge.

It was nearly an hour later when you finally catch sight of the hospital; it was a tall, sprawling structure and its white painted sides were almost painful to look at in the brilliant sunlight. “There it is” Regina uttered proudly, gesturing towards the distant building “I told you I could find it”

“Ready for your exam sweet tits?” Walter’s whisper was just loud enough for you to hear

“Let’s just get in there” you snap grimly.

With you in the lead, the four of you slowly approach the hospital doors; they were once a pair of motion activated, sliding glass doors but now they were dangling loosely from their tracks and the glass panels were now shattered beyond repair. Conrad shoves them open and gestured you inside “Maternity, Pediatrics and Pre-Natal care are on the third floor” Regina says, gesturing towards the large, brightly coloured map fastened to the wall “There is a staircase over there” Conrad replies, pointing towards the doors.

The staircase is large and well light from the bright sunlight coming through the large windows; while three stories of stairs is not really that far but to you the climb to the third floor is somehow both endless and at the same time lasts not nearly long enough.

It does not take the four of you long to find the maternity ward and soon enough Regina has dragged an ultrasound machine over to one of the cots and orders you to strip; you slowly pull off the dark green dress you are wearing, pausing midway to give level an icy cold glare at Walter when he lets out a wolf whistle at the sight of your naked breasts and tiny panties.

“Don’t we need electricity to use this?” you ask weakly, now that the time is here you find yourself **** to continue What if it’s some kind of monster? you think frantically What if it’s dangerous? What would I do then?

“Actually no” Regina replies absently, she has already applied some kind of thick, clear jelly to your stomach and now has begun flipping switches and turning knobs on the ultrasound machine “The machine has a small battery pack inside it for when the power goes out, it will last more than long enough to do this”

“Great” you whisper, heart racing in your breast like you have just run a marathon.

The ultrasound machine emits a faint humming noise and lights begin to blink on the display panels; Regina takes up the ‘wand’ and presses it to your stomach “Let’s take a look inside, shall we?” Every pair of eyes in the room is locked on the display screen as Regina begins.

what does the ultrasound show?
