Money Talks

Drew Copeland sat in her coach’s office stunned.

“Wait… what?” The words her coach had just said wouldn’t sink in.

“You heard me Copeland.” The gruff male voice of Coach Sharp said. He was a large middle aged man. Drew didn’t like him, but out of necessity she had tolerated him. He was new this year, brought in after the Coach who had recruited her had left for another job.

“Now I can’t explicitly tell you to transfer… that would be against the rules.” His voice was deep and oily. It almost sounded like she was at the mechanic getting conned into hundreds of dollars of repairs on her car she didn’t need, not hearing about how her college career was falling apart in front of her.

“But… I have a scholarship!” Drew was still stunned. Someone had to be pulling a prank on her.

“And that’s what I’m saying… you don’t have no scholarship. At least not anymore.” Sharp’s voice started to sound annoyed at the girls inability to grasp what he was saying.

“I need that scholarship to recruit and bring in new girls. Now I’m not gonna cut you cause I think you’d make a good depth piece for us. But I can’t have a Junior who’s gonna ride the bench all season on a full scholarship.”

“But… but… how will I pay for class… housing??”

“Copeland I don’t have time for this. It is what it is. If you’re transferring I’ll understand.”

“I can’t transfer…” Drew felt the reality hit her like a ton of bricks. She felt the tears start to well up in her eyes. She registered that Sharp was still speaking, but she couldn’t bear the thought of breaking down in front of this man.

Quickly she stood up and bolted from the office and into the locker room. All of her teammates paused and looked at her. Practice had just ended and they were all in various states of undress as they prepared to head home for the evening. Drew still in her practice uniform turned and walked out of the locker room. If she was going to break down it wouldn’t be here.

Hey all! This story will be much in the same vein of my story The Email! You don’t need to read it but the idea is the same (though I do recommend reading it if you can… it’s one of the better things I’ve written). The following chapters will introduce our characters and the competition they will compete in. From there I will ask folks to vote in the comments about who their favorites are as they compete in those challenges.
