Mission with Ada
The dense canopy overhead filters the sunlight into a dappled mosaic on the forest floor as I step cautiously, my dagger clutched tightly in my hand. The air is thick with the scent of moss and earth, and every rustle and chirp sets my nerves on edge.
Ahead of me, Ada moves with a grace that seems almost otherworldly, her tall, lithe form slipping effortlessly through the undergrowth. Her blond hair catches the light, shimmering like spun gold.

Beside her, the hulking form of our tank, Marcus, is a reassuring sight. His massive shield is slung across his back, and his axe rests easily in his grip, ready for anything.

Bringing up the rear is Lily, the nerdy, chubby red-haired girl with glasses, her bag of assorted items clinking softly with each step.

I can’t help but feel a pang of inadequacy as I look at them. All I have is the dagger I stole from an orc, and no clue how to wield magic.
“Ada,” I call out, trying to keep the frustration out of my voice. “I don’t know anything about magic. I thought you’d at least teach me a few things before we came out here.”
She turns to face me, her expression a mixture of amusement and mild condescension. “You’ll learn quicker on the terrain,” she says, her voice carrying a natural condescending tone “Especially since the air in this forest is charged with mana. It will help you get a grasp of magic for yourself.”
I frown, not entirely convinced. “But what if I mess up? What if I can’t do it?”
“Then you better not be far from Marcus,” she replies. “Because otherwise, you will become fertilizer for the forest.”
Her words hit me like a punch to the gut, and I swallow hard, glancing over at Marcus. He meets my gaze and gives me a reassuring nod.
Lily steps up beside me, her eyes wide with excitement behind her glasses. “Ackshually, I brought a few books and some basic alchemical supplies,” she says, her voice tinged with enthusiasm. “I can help you study while we’re here. It’ll be fun!”
Marcus chuckles, the sound deep and reassuring. “Don’t worry, man. We’ve got your back. Just focus on learning, and we’ll handle the rest.”
I take a deep breath, feeling a bit more grounded with their support. “Alright,” I say, trying to muster some confidence. “Let’s do this.”
Ada suddenly stops, her keen eyes narrowing as she studies the ground. "Marks," she says, pointing. "Footprints. Someone ran, maybe tripped and fell."
I step closer and look where she’s pointing. The prints of shoes are mixed with the heavy, unmistakable footprints of multiple orcs. My stomach churns. "Orcs," I mutter, a sense of dread settling over me.
Ada continues forward, her gaze focused. A few yards away, she stops again and bends down, picking up a familiar pair of high heels. My heart skips a beat, recognizing them instantly. "Those... those are my mom's."
I feel a cold sweat break out across my forehead. Memories of seeing an orc trying to **** Jasmine mix with the idea that they might try to do the same to my mom and maybe many of them at the same time, and fear tightens its grip on my chest. "We have to find her," I say, my voice shaking.
We follow the trail, my fear mounting with every step. Further along, we find her purse, its contents scattered and flowing down a small stream of water. I kneel down, picking up a few items, my hands trembling.
"The trail ends here," Ada announces, her tone grim. "The woman's footprints disappear. Only the orcs' remain. They probably kidnapped her."
A surge of anger washes over me, hotter and more intense than anything I've ever felt. "No," I whisper, my fists clenching. "Not my mom."
The rage builds inside me, growing stronger with each passing second. Suddenly, there's a flash of light on my shoulder, bright and blinding. I stagger back, the intensity of the light startling me.
"Whoa," Marcus says, stepping closer. "What was that?"
Ada's eyes widen, a hint of surprise breaking through her usual composure. "Mana," she murmurs, almost to herself. "You conjured a flame with mana."
I stare at my shoulder, where the light slowly fades, leaving a warm, tingling sensation behind. "What... what just happened?" I ask, my voice unsteady.
Ada steps forward, her expression a mix of curiosity and respect. "The mana in the forest responded to your emotions. I told you you'd learn better on terrain. Just like yesterday."
I take a deep breath, trying to steady myself. "Then let's use it," I say, determination hardening my voice. "Let's find my mom and take down those orcs."
Ada nods, a small smile playing at the corners of her mouth. "Agreed."
With renewed determination, we press forward, the trail of the orcs leading us deeper into the heart of the forest. The fear is still there, gnawing at the edges of my mind, but now it's tempered with a burning resolve. I'll save my mom, no matter what it takes.
