His stepmom

John sips his soda, feeling the cool, fizzy liquid trickle down his throat. He catches sight of his stepmom, Ava, standing near the grill, chatting with a younger woman who looks to be around 24. Ava’s auburn hair glows in the fading sunlight, her laughter carrying over the noise of the party.

The younger woman next to her has a fresh, vibrant presence. She has shoulder-length blonde hair, loosely curled, framing a face that’s bright with enthusiasm. Her eyes are a striking green, set off by a subtle touch of eyeliner, and her skin has a healthy, sun-kissed glow. She’s wearing a light blue sundress that sways with her movements, hinting at a sense of elegance tempered by casual comfort.

John starts to make his way over, curious about the woman Ava is talking to. As he gets closer, Ava notices him and waves him over with a smile.

“John! Come here, I want you to meet someone,” Ava calls out, her eyes sparkling with warmth.

John approaches, returning the smile. “Hey, Ava. Who’s this?”

“This is Rose,” Ava says, placing a hand on the young woman’s shoulder. “Rose, this is my stepson, John.”

Rose extends her hand, her smile bright and welcoming. “Nice to meet you, John. Ava’s told me a lot about you.”

“Nice to meet you too, Rose,” John replies, shaking her hand. “All good things, I hope.”

Rose laughs, a light, musical sound. “Absolutely. It’s great to finally put a face to the name.”

Before their conversation can go further, Mrs. Carter bustles over, her presence commanding attention. “John, there you are! I was hoping to catch you. Do you have a moment?”

John glances at Ava and Rose, then back at Mrs. Carter. “Sure, Mrs. Carter. What’s up?”

“I’d like to introduce you to a friend of mine. She’s been wanting to meet you,” Mrs. Carter says, gesturing for him to follow her.

John nods, turning back to Rose and Ava. “It was nice meeting you, Rose. We’ll have to talk more later.”

“Definitely,” Rose replies, her eyes lingering on him for a moment longer.
