Chapter 59 by TheUnfathomable TheUnfathomable

-"What should I do now?" HA, NOW I STOLE IT FROM YOU!

I suppose we should get building.

I let out a large sigh as I considered what I should do at the moment. 'Well, doing anything with the party is most certainly off the table at the moment. I at the very least need to give them time. That leaves... going right back and working on the church, doesn't it?' I felt a bit of frustration at the fact of the most productive thing I could do being to go back to where I just was.

Regardless, it most certainly was my best option. 'I shouldn't call for Norman's help yet due to the creature, as it seems like something I should secure first. Speaking of, I guess I should try and handle that now.' On the way back to the lot I bought some food, a mixture of bread, fruit, and meat as I didn't know what the creature was and therefore did not know its diet.

As I walked down the street, I considered what I would do with the creature. That of course depended heavily on what the creature could do, but there were still options regardless. It could possibly make for a good mascot or guardian of the church, if need be, or perhaps if it grew it may serve as a mount? The possibilities were endless, yet actually rather finite.

Soon enough I was back at the lot, the Spirit having moved to a new location, looking at a shrub. Looking around, I could tell that there had been at least a few escape attempts by the little critter, as the edge of the lot was outlined by a series of roots and other growths to block its movements.

As I entered the clearing, the shrub the Spirit was watching shook, and something dashed from it back to the brick pile. I could not get a good view of it, as it moved extremely fast. The Spirit followed quickly as well, making sure it did not make a dash to leave the area. Soon enough, it was in a position almost identical to when I had left.

I carefully approached the brick pile, making sure not to startle whatever may be within. I had a little bit of experience with animals, though I had never been the type to buy an exotic pet for the prestige. In my past life, the reason I would get a pet is for my own companionship, and I never was in one place for long enough or had enough free time in order to care for one.

Once I got close, I tried to see the creature within from a slight distance, though I quickly got more than I bargained for. As I leaned down, a saw a blur as the critter charged forth, and bit my nose. I let out a yell of surprise as I fell backwards, the creature maintaining its grip on my face.

As I quickly recovered from the shock, I carefully grasped the creature, feeling cool scales upon my hands. As I carefully got it to unlock its jaw, so it did not tear of my nose, I got a heft of its weight. At last, I was holding it a good foot or so away from my face, clutching it under its front arms angled so it couldn't twist and bite me.

Getting a good look at it, it was some form of reptilian. It had slitted red eyes and black-gray scales, with a built comparable to a Komodo. On the other hand, it was the size of a large cat, maybe a small Cocker Spaniel. It also had a different form of scales, having fewer, larger ones that reminded me of a knight's armor. Its stomach had smaller, white scales akin to a snake. It had a thicker tongue that still split at the end, which I had the displeasure of knowing had a sandpaper texture.

It thrashed about within my grip before stopping after about a minute, seemingly deciding it was a waste of energy. It stared at me, blinking with sideways see-through eyelids every couple seconds. After awhile of this peaceful interval, it changed its tactic to trying to worm around and bite me.

While carefully maneuvering to not be bit, I used Incur Growth to make a cradle of sorts, carefully dropping the lizard onto a makeshift bed of leaves and moss that was resting on a bush. As soon as it landed, it tried to dash, but the plant finished growing to entrap it first. With the branches of the bush interlocking around it, it was caged.

I took a moment to examine it some more. It was larger than any lizard I had seen in my last life, though I most certainly was aware of ones bigger than it. It ran around its makeshift cage, trying to find a good way out. Eventually it just stopped running around and returned to staring at me. 'I truly wonder what thoughts could be behind those eyes, if it does think. Regardless, the taming attempts did not start well.'

Seeing as it was a lizard of that size, it probably ate meat or perhaps fruit, so a carefully offered it a bit of both. It simply continued to stare at me unmoving, refusing to consume my gifted food. I gave out a sigh and thought about what I should do. 'I mean, it is literally a saying that you can bring an animal to food and water but can't make it eat or drink. I suppose I will just have to be patient? Though I don't like the idea, I see no better option.'

While I considered this, I decided I should get work started. Going over the pros and cons of getting Norman's help at the minute, I realized something. I quickly used my magic to try and pull something from my domain. Soon enough, I had four blank white masks drawn out of my domain, the spirits' clothes seemingly coming out from some space behind them before giving their bodies shape once again.

Now that I had the five spirits, I gave them basic instructions on what I wanted. They immediately got to work, digging out the ground and shaping it to make space for the foundation. I was satisfied as I watched them, they may not have been super strong compared to me, but they most certainly could get these simple parts handled with minimal issue. Worst case, I messed up some part or another and I simply get them to redo it, but they don't tire, and it costs me nothing.

With that settled I turned back to the cage, catching the lizard devouring the food I had left for it. I chuckled to myself as I watched it eat, it was an interesting spectacle. It seems it was omnivorous, as it scarfed down the fruit and meat indiscriminately.

I considered if I should continue to investigate it using my own methods, but seeing as it clearly was not a creature that existed in my last life, I conceded to using God's Eye.

What does he see?
