Rebecca makes a mistake and avoids confrontation

Author’s note: this is gonna sound weird but this chapter has spoilers for the movie Interstellar. It probably wouldn’t matter without more context from the film, but just in case I will put this warning.

Is this…real? It was all Rebecca could think. Had Rachael seriously just flashed her tits right in front of her? Sent a nude…right in front of her? To someone she barely knew? Who was this blonde airhead sitting across from Rebecca? The longer Rebecca looked at Rachael, the less she recognized her.

“Rachael, what the hell was that?” Before Rachael could respond, however, Rebecca continued. “never mind, it doesn’t matter right now. We’re going to watch a movie.”

This might have seemed completely insane after what Rebecca just saw and how concerned she really was, but the movie was actually a test. The movie was Interstellar, which Rachael had watched at least a handful of times. Rachael loves the filmed and could fairly well explain the scientific concepts, despite science not being the main focus in her courses. Rachael was basically a genius, after all.

Much to Rebecca’s chagrin, Rachael was almost completely lost throughout the film. She didn’t seem to understand a thing.

“Wait, like, wut? How is time different on this planet than on earth? I’m totally too dumb to understand this.” Rachael’s face was purely confused, not a single idea as to what was going on. Rebecca was a bit confused on how Rachael could be confused at this point...it wasn't hard to follow the narrative even if you didn't understand the science.

When the emotional scene with Murph’s video messages came up, Rebecca watched in complete disbelief as Rachael sobbed and cried. She had never seen Rachael get so emotional. This was the only part of the movie that really clicked for Rachael that night.

After that, Rachael fell asleep before the film could even end. She might as well have been asleep during any parts of the movie that weren’t action or emotional.

“Holy shit.” Rebecca shed a couple tears of her own. They had just sat through Interstellar like twice before, except Rachael didn’t go on any scientific tangents to explain things Rebecca didn’t get. Actually, Rebecca understood the film better than Rachael, having to explain things to her. Interstellar itself wasn't super hard to follow, but Rachael always showed off her intellect by commenting on the science and principles. But now Rachael seemed like she knew absolutely nothing.

“I’m not supposed to be the smarter one…”

Rebecca’s soul was hurt and confused, truly understanding that the person next to her on the bed was no longer Rachael Simmons in anything but name. Rebecca snuck off to the bathroom, and what followed was a very long, aching cry. When Rebecca returned from the bathroom, Rachael and all of her things were no where to be seen.

Had Rebecca confronted Rachael right then and there, she may have been able to save the poor girl from losing even more of herself. Unfortunately, Rebecca was quite lost without her best friend and didn't know what to do other than runaway. She may never get another chance to help Rachael...
