What should we do with it?
Clothes for her and a toy for him
How about you go pick out a toy while I grab a few clothes?"
Alex's face lights up at the suggestion. "Really? May I get a toy?"
Mary ruffles his hair affectionately. "Yes, you can. But remember, we're still in a public place, so no running off on your own, okay?"
Alex nods eagerly. "I promise, Mom."
With that, they head to the checkout line. The cashier gives them a friendly smile as she scans their items, and Mary hands over her credit card. After what seems like an eternity, the cashier finally hands them their receipt, along with a few dollars in change.
As they make their way out of the store, Mary turns to Alex. "Okay, take a few dollars, you go have fun and pick out a toy. I'll be over there," she says, pointing to a clothing store across the way.
Alex nods, feeling a little bittersweet. He knows that his mother sees him as a small, helpless child, but he doesn't mind. He loves her all the same.
