Chapter 10

What's next?

Mary Andrea wants to get out

Mary Andrea slowly and measuredly wandered deeper into the labyrinth. Again and again, her hand, which was in contact with the wall to her right, reached into emptiness and she had to change her hold. This was not really a problem. You just had to stick strictly to the rules and proceed consistently in order to cross a maze safely. Then nothing could go wrong.

However, she had to admit that she was becoming increasingly confused. If she tried to retrace in her head the paths and turns she had taken, she should have left the premises long ago. The blue-painted wooden building hadn't looked that expansive from the outside. But this was just a demonstration of the skill and craftsmanship of the fairground people who had thought up and built this attraction. So there was no need to worry. Mary Andrea made a mental note to congratulate the operators on their work when she reached the exit. Which couldn't be long at all, could it?

All of a sudden, someone walked towards her. It was a young man with a fashionable short haircut, wearing a T-shirt, jeans and sneakers. He stopped an arm's length in front of her and smiled. However, the smile did not reach his eyes, which instead scrutinized the nun from head to toe. This intrusive examination seemed a little inappropriate and increasingly threatening.

"What do you want from me?"

She waited in vain for an answer for several heartbeats. Nor did her counterpart show any sign that he had heard her at all. Then it dawned on her that this must be a reflection from somewhere else in the cabinet. Tentatively, she reached out a hand and it was indeed touching cold glass. But the image was so realistic!

And what's more, the guy seemed to be able to see her too. Huh, that was a little bit scary. Goosebumps ran down her spine and she decided to leave the labyrinth as quickly as possible.

She looked around. Ah, there! She could already see the exit. Determined, she set off.

Ponk. Ouch!

The nun staggered back and held her forehead, which she had bumped painfully. Ah, she should have known and paid attention. Of course there would be no straight path to the door, only the mirrors had tricked her.

"You fool," she scolded herself, "follow the rule and walk carefully. That's the safest thing to do."

With her fingertips on the right-hand wall, she carefully moved foot for foot. The wall bent and Mary Andrea changed direction. She took a few baby steps. Another bend, change of direction. Steps, bend, change of direction. Steps, bend, change of direction. Again and again.

That was strange. Where was the passage? She couldn't have been locked in. There had to be some way she had gotten here.

She stretched out both arms. And indeed, she could just about touch the mirrored walls on both sides with her fingertips.

She turned carefully on her own axis. She never lost contact with the glass on all sides. But that was not possible! Panic gripped her at the idea of being trapped. She randomly pounded one of the mirrors with her fists.

"I want to get out of here!"
