Chapter 4

Where to?

Rock climbing, but first some dinner

Mercy's group of friends was meeting up at an indoor rock climbing arena and then maybe going for drinks after. On her way through the parking garage, she tapped replies into her phone to let her friends know she was up for it, and added a few complaints about her day. The weird moment with the bizarre app had already completely slipped her mind.

At her car, she checked the time. There was a little under an hour before the appointed time, and she was hungry. With limited time and the promise of a moderate workout climbing rock in the immediate future, it was going to have to be something light. There was a nice little soup and salad shop not far from the rock climbing place.

As she drove, she turned up her pop music radio station and lost herself in the upbeat melodies, doing her best to unwind from her irritating workday so she could meet up with her friends in good spirits. She checked herself in the mirror, satisfied that her makeup had lasted the whole day without needing any attention. That's why she bought the good stuff.

She pulled into the parking lot and climbed out of her car. As she stood, she felt her skirt settle a little lower onto her hips and froze. Her skirt had been very recently tailored, it fit her perfectly around the waist, and she'd been wearing it all day without it moving around at all.

She reached for the waist of the garment and discovered that it was loose. She could pinch almost a half inch of extra length from the waistline.

Figuring she must have looked like a crazy person, standing in the middle of the parking lot tugging at her clothes, she gave up and walked inside to order and try to puzzle it out.

"Do your clothes ever just... Get bigger and fall off of you?" She asked the bored looking girl at the counter.

The cashier just looked her up and down before saying flatly, "No. Must be nice."

After picking up her meal, she settled into a booth to review at app while she ate. Something weird was going on.

She stared at the words "You become thinner." There was no way the app did something to her, right? And yet, it was too much of a coincidence to ignore. when it was time to leave, Mercy was shocked to discover that she'd only eaten half her food, because she felt full. She had been hungry and it was already a light dinner.

Bewildered at how unbothered she was, she let the clock spur her from her booth to the rock climbing gym. She didn't have time to sort this out.
