Chapter 4

What happens next?

The Third Battle of the Phillipine Sea

The crew of the US fleet stationed in the Philipines waited in unease for the Japanese. It was dusk, and the night was coming to an end. Aware that the marine girls had been sent home to 'contribute towards the war in other forms', they were aware that they were doomed.

The admiral had disclosed that the Japanese outnumbered them two to one and that the mission was not to win, but to inflict as much damage as possible against the Japanese fleet.

With the first rays of the sun in the air, Admiral Stewart ordered a few fighters into the air to locate the Japanese fleet. Their best chance lay in surprising the Japanese fleet. As he gave the order, he heard someone yell through the radio.

"USS Iowa here. Enemy aircraft coming"

The officers rushed out to inform the crew, and the admiral gave orders for every US fighter to take off. He then glanced towards the sunrise. A swarm of a combination of fighters and bombers were approaching from the direction, the ends of their wings stamped with red circles. 'At least double our planes' the admiral mumbled.

Anti-aircraft guns buzzed continuously. The Japanese had the numbers, in aircraft, but their pilots were clearly inexperienced. Many failed to evade the anti-air shells and were struck. Planes turned into balls of fire, extinguished upon slamming into the sea.

"Torpedoes!"

A plane flew above the USS Mississippi. Captain Mark Johnson looked in that direction.

"Oh God"

8 rippled lines in the water indicated the torpedoes dropped by the bomber. The captain closed his eyes and hoped for the best...

"Oh shit!" the admiral exclaimed.

The Mississippi, in front of his Iowa class battleship, had exploded violently, splitting into two. Perhaps, the torpedoes had hit the ammunition compartment.

Admiral Yamamoto peered through the binoculars from the Yamamoto class battleship he commanded, along with the fleet.

"Ah, beautiful," he said to the officers in the room, who saw the explosion in front of them.

"The Americans are blind in the east. They cannot see us through the rising sun. I want every vessel to attack the fleet, understood?"

"Yes sir!" The officers scrambled off to the decks and radio room.

"The East!" blared on the radio.

Squinting in the east, the captains of the US vessels understood. The dark figures in the light were unquestionably the Japanese fleet, who had just begun to lob shells at the US fleet, who immediately responded in kind. But the positions of the Japanese fleet were hard to see through the sun, and the crew struggled to strike them.

The American planes headed towards the Japanese fleet to hopefully sink a few vessels. But the American planes were inferior in technology and numbers and were hunted down by the Japanese fighters.

Soon, the Japanese fleet had closed in from the east and another wave of aircraft was approaching.

The bombers quickly destroyed the American cruisers, and the Japanese cruisers in turn wiped the American carriers.

The 5 Japanese battleships turned into position and fired a devastating barrage against the remaining two American battleships, starting with the USS Alaska, which exploded instantly from taking 60 shells.

Admiral Stewart simply watched as the Japanese fleet turned its guns on his USS Iowa, the last ship standing, and closed his eyes, as he heard them fire one by one....

The US government already knew of the Philippine fleet's coming doom. The military realized that they were falling behind resource-wise. More men were needed. As such, the free-use act was expanded to target the most fertile of men and women.

What's next?
